I'm sure I'll get dogpiled for this, but... how do you KNOW that there aren't autistic folks writing poor fanfiction? Just because a story with an autistic headcanon is bad doesn't 100% mean that an "NT" wrote it, does it?

Not everyone advertises their diagnosis.

Autistic people have a hivemind and spidey sense where they can detect one another based on words alone.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people advertise their non-diagnosis, though - certainly fewer put "NT" in their bio than will put "ASD/ADD/MPD/[whatever else]", but it does happen!

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
All autistic folks are savants so they couldn't possibly be bad writers. And the aforementioned hivemind means they know they have to include nuance otherwise it'll be just like something written by those pesky NTs!

They're not saying that autistic people can't write bad fanfiction with bad characterization.

What they're saying is that they can tell when someone writes a character as autistic when they have no idea what it's like to be autistic and just know the stereotypes and what they've heard about it from other people and maybe skimmed the Wikipedia entry. That's what they're complaining about.

AYRT

... so we agree, that's "badly written" autism, right?

All I was asking is how they know, with 100% certainty, that the writer of such a badly-written fic is neurotypical?

To me that's more or less equivalent to saying that ALL badly written porn is written by virgins. Which simply isn't true.

(I'm generally having problems with such a sweeping generalization.)

Fucking cosigned. I feel like there should be a rule that if you want to write about any disorder or mental illness or any form of brainweirds, you should at least read the Wikipedia page for it first - because the number of people I've encountered who don't seem aware that autism spectrum disorder involves a SPECTRUM is sort of depressing.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-30 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
... not just autism, either.

The number of people who don't seem aware that MOST human behavior is on a spectrum is appalling. The people who will tell you you're doing sex / romance / abuse recovery / PTSD etc "wrong" really pisses me off.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
As long as by "headcanon" you mean "way I interpret this character" and not "anyone who says otherwise is WRONG and an EVIL NT" I'm cool with that. But I've seen an awful lot of the latter (and not just with disability headcanons).

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
They don't. They mean "Autistic people (of whom I am the spokesperson because I say so) are the ultimate authority not only on who is an autistic character but how they should be portrayed, and anyone who disagrees should DIAF". Some of the vile abuse hurled at people daring to question if a character is really autistic (especially very attractive, competent people like Sherlock) has to be seen to be believed. And of course the person must backtrack, can't stick to their guns (for a FICTIONAL person, let's recall) because they are automatically hounded for being "ableist".
I avoid all fannish contact with the majority of (mostly self-diagnosed) autistic fans now. Toxic.
Yes, line up to call me an asshole, tip fedora, have what you like. Truth hurts.

I don't doubt your experiences but I think they're influencing the way you're reading the original secret. I didn't get that tone at all.

Now I'm curious about a neuroatypical Vulcan. Vulcans base themselves heavily on logical behavior, what traits would a neuroatypical Vulcan have?

I'm pretty sure Spock's brother in the godawful Star Trek 5 movie would be considered neuroatypical for a Vulcan... or may just a non-conformist? Don't know.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Spock is Vulcan... Do they realize we're talking about a whole different species here? Same with The Doctor honestly. I'm sure there might be some form of autism within their races, but putting human traits/emotions on non-humans will always be weird to me. It's just not the same.
