Don't watch this, but I think you're spot on about people seeing sarcastic and cutting as intelligent, and easily flustered/shy/what have you must mean 'not intelligent'. And it's so not true!

Love this secret !

I agree! Aziraphale was very intelligent in this series. I have no idea what people are talking about!

(Anonymous) 2019-08-01 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely agree, OP!

Yeah I honestly have no clue what they're talking about. They're the same. I haven't even seen any examples given from those people so you're probably onto something with your theory.

There are multiple instances of him getting himself into trouble in the series and I’m surprised nobody’s pointing that out. TBF, I didn’t feel like Crowley looked like a genius, he was just a step ahead when it came to dangerous humans.

Bold of you to assume he didn't get himself in trouble on purpose so that Crowley would rescue him.

(In all seriousness, making poor life choices, esp. in regard to misjudging human behaviour, does not necessarily mean a lack of intelligence.)

It lacks a kind of intelligence. I haven’t seen anyone try to argue he’s an absolute moron, just that he gets himself into problems they maybe can’t see Aziraphale getting into as the book version. And these are people who like the character. OP’s deep analysis of gendered bias seems a bit of a stretch.

I've been mulling this over, and I actually agree with the anon who said that he didn't seem as smart in the show as in the book. He got himself into some jams that should have been easy for an angel to anticipate.

I think the *intent* was to show the caring and trust building between Aziraphale and Crowley over the years. But I think the dangers should have been harder to forsee. Maybe Aziraphale should have rescued Crowley, too, but the holy water thing may have been intended to balance the scales.

tbh i think they're both supposed to be kinda dumb. not a bad thing tho.

TV Aziraphale figured out Adam's name, address, and phone number and that shit would go down at the airbase. Basically, he figured out everything we see Anathema and Newt puzzle out later, and then some, since Anathema only connects the one prophecy to Adam because Newt already had his name and address from Shadwell, who got it from Aziraphale. He even tells Crowley that he made lots of notes and things and had them in the book. We just don't see him work all of it through, just a montage of him reading and then the bit with the phone number, and by that point the audience also already knows a lot of this stuff since we've already met Adam as a character. It seems at first glance that Aziraphale doesn't do anything, but he really does, propelling the storyline for him and Crowley, but also Anathema, Neat, Shadwell, and Mdme. Tracy.
