I do appreciate you didn't say ALL, OP, because while I and most of the older players I know didn't start playing MMOs until our late 40s (I've been playing on and off for 15 years), the only way you could get us to watch or listen to Fox News is if you strapped us in a chair and wired our eyes open a la Clockwork Orange (and you wouldn't even have to give us the nausea drugs).

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but what do you guys play?

We mostly played WoW from vanilla through Legion, also some SWTOR, Aion, LoTR, and Rift. A few are playing ESO now. I thik there was a bout of WHO in there as well.

Anyone going back for classic? lol

Eh, not me at least. Blizz killed my willingness to give them my money a while ago.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say I blame you for that lol

I'm just fascinated by the idea of an MMO coming back after 15 years, and the average age of the players being that much older, I wonder how it will affect things

I guess it will depend on how heavily tinted the nostalgia glasses are?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
+1, I'm a gamer in my 40s and I think there's a lot of older conservative players because they've got into MMOs through military interests - fandoms with a military or cop basis (SG-1, SGA, NCIS, Blue Bloods, Hawaii 5-0 remake) often have a very conservative group of fans quite separate from what you would expect from fandom. But there's also plenty of us who, like you say, are nauseated at the very thought of Fox News!

(Anonymous) 2019-08-07 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The Hawaii 5-0 remake?! Jesus, they must have had heart attacks from all of the Steve/Danny that was pumped out during it's heyday.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I find that a lot of the time I find out at all about other people's ages is if they're conservative-leaning and complaining about how things were better "back in their day"

So there's probably some self-selection bias

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, I suspect that many of the people who spam politics into chat tend to skew young.

On the other hand, many of my peers have given up on multiplayer, or at least being social in multiplayer because they don't want to deal with harassment or "debaters."

Spamming politics is always annoying, but it's worse if the politics are bad.

I guess I understand your feelings on this, but I tend to see more young people talking conservatively in chats. Could be skewed perceptions, though.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
IME they're different types. The majority of young "conservatives" I run into in chats tend to be MAGAtrolls that are doing it to get a rise out of people. Once in a while you get a true believer, but usually it's memes and pissing off the libruls lolz! They're loud, and aggressive, and racist, and sexist, but they're noise, lost in a sea of trolls trolling trolls.

The older folks who are tried and true conservatives tend to be the anti-vaxx QAnon Obama-hatin' racist hardcore Fox News types who sincerely believe in echo chamber Facebook news and don't believe climate change is real. While the younger ones can be just as nasty, the Facebook grandma/grandpa types who can't tell a real news source from a fake one creep me out a whole lot more. Because they're not saying any of that to troll you. They're saying it because they really, truly believe what they read on Facebook is reality and are genuinely afraid of everyone in the world who isn't straight and white and Christian don't get how you don't feel the same

I'll take dumb teen librul tears idiots over conspiracy nut Facebook uncles any day

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
i don't see why

if someone is being racist why does it matter to you if they "truly" believe it?

not to mention that the alt-right has been building itself on """"" irony """"" for years

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, yes, it matters, because one is clearly worse than the other.

They're both obviously bad. But there's a certain type of reality-denying Facebook-fanatic that only happens with real conspiracy nutters and those tend not to be your average dumb teen spouting memes in chat

[personal profile] silverr 2019-08-06 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
On the plus side, the older Facebook uncles are, the sooner they'll die off.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-12 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't you lovely. I'm tired of the wishing death on older people in case some of them don't check every box of someone's acceptable beliefs and political leanings list. Don't you have anyone over 50 in your life that you give a shit about?

I'm in my 60s, and if it's okay with you I'm going to continue to be fed up with shitheads who lack compassion and empathy.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think more of them believe in it than you seem to think, at least in part. It's not like these kids are compassionate liberals with a prankster side who cant stop themselves from a little playful trickery calling people "N----R". Oh my! How ironic! Ho ho! Also it's sort of a 'gateway drug' to the actual extremist groups.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, just punks in mom's basement.I had a cousin like that until he got straightened out in college.

It's the old folks who can't change.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Leaving politics aside, you know where older gamers come from, right? They started when they were young and then time passed.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
More like older people were young then time passed, and older people tend to be more conservative in general. Gamers have nothing to do with it besides this is where OP is encountering them.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
meanwhile in ffxiv i got ghosted by someone after telling them in advance i was gonna spend the weekend round my friend's place who doesnt have internet, and also hit on in a rp guild and not-so-subtly asked to rp futa by a user after telling me my character's lore was unrealistic ------ while people on the subreddit are talking about how great and welcoming the community is after a week of playing it Dx

F

i feel like the userbase on ffxiv are too busy being horny to care about politics at this point
