I want to know what OP thinks is better. I remember this being a comment secret.

It's not overrated because, unlike a lot of things that ARE overrated, it was truly brilliant. Truly, truly brilliant. But I think it's a stretch to call anything the best series ever.

It there any objective way to judge this?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-07 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, there are objective measures, sure, but for any creative endeavor, at least part of the judgment is going to include subjective components.

IMDb only has Planet Earth II ranked higher (Chernobyl is ranked 2). On the other hand, Rotten Tomatoes doesn't even have it ranked in the top three for currently airing shows (it's 5th, behind Fleabag: Season 2, Tuca & Bertie: Season 1, Jane the Virgin: Season 5, and Orange Is the New Black: Season 7).

I have no skin in the game as I haven't watched it, but I would be hard pressed to say someone was wrong for thinking this.

I don't think there's any objective way to judge it, but I am absolutely certain that IMDB isn't.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's just the allure of the fresh and the new.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
This show was wonderful. I cannot think of a single flaw other than I guess the actors not being Russian. Nothing problematic or gross, no pointless filler, no needless sex scenes thrown in for male viewers, it was a perfectly paced, tight knit series that was gripping from the very first episode onward and didn't overstay its welcome.

Tell us what you think is better, OP.

I agree. It was really, really good, but I categorically refuse to give ANYTHING the title of "best," mostly because such a ranking depends on the criteria used, and I don't believe it's possible to have criteria that are eternally, unanimously, and universally accepted. (I also don't believe that anything can be perfect; perfection to me equates to " all things to all people.")

Having said, that, I did find it really, really good.

No, not the best TV series ever in the history of TV, but holy FUCK it was so good, and so terrifying and so heartbreaking.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with OP - I couldn’t even make it through the first episode, I know the radiation burns and that were meant to be realistic, but as a horror fan it just seemed tame.
And I’m British, so the accents were jarring (I guess Americans wouldn’t notice that).
I’d honestly have loved to see an alternate universe where a British nuclear power plant exploded, and at least then it would have felt original.
Honestly, I’d rather watch a documentary than an inaccurate biopic.

Why would you want gore and shock factor in a show that treats the event with dignity? The show having restraint in showing the horrific effects of ARS was a good thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
The show was exceptionally gory though in its own way. I've never seen such a depiction of lethal radiation before.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think the reason so many people loved it was shock factor, but without the shock factor it was just a meh drama.
Also I'm showing my age, but there was lots of documentaries etc, and the true horror is the system that allowed it to happen.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Americans did notice, we're not all stupid.

And I'm hard pressed to think of much better in the way of horror. The sheer power, magnitude, and deadliness of this disaster reminds me of some lovecraftian horror. Those who looked directly at the exposed core basically melted less than a week later. And this really happened. What horror is better than that.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Overrated?? Really?

The show was pretty much perfect. There may be some better shows, but Chernobyl is top tier, no doubt. You're making it out like there's this whole other tier above it which no one seems to know about except for you. Since there's so many shows that were way better, surely you could rattle off a dozen, easy.

There is no such thing as the objectively best TV series. There is only whatever currently has the highest rating on a particular system, which is bot objectively the best.

Looks really good, though! I need to see this soon.
