favorite meal

what's your all-time go-to favorite thing to eat?

Re: favorite meal

(Anonymous) 2019-08-17 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard to say because that depends on my mood and what time of year it is, but I love a plate of angelhair pasta with spicy tomato sauce and Italian sausage, with lots of grated parmesan on the top. Garlic bread, too.

Lasagne, but only the way my family makes it. If I eat lasagne out at restaurants, I'm always disappointed.

Say you could meet one celebrity and ask them one question and they have to answer it fully and truthfully. Who do you meet and what do you ask?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I ask them anywhere? If so, I would ask Donald Trump, on air, "What crimes have you committed?"

I'd ask Miley Cyrus/Amanda Bines if they were alright/how could I help them, but then I realized that I have no means, or capabilities to help/support them, so the question would probably be moot.

Faithful Vs Unfaithful Adaptations

(Anonymous) 2019-08-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by #8 - which do you prefer, an adaptation that changes everything, or an adaptation that's willing to stick precisely to the source? Are there any adaptations that you really liked or hated because they were willing to make changes?

Re: Faithful Vs Unfaithful Adaptations

(Anonymous) 2019-08-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I love it when adaptations change things around - I think it's much more interesting to see a director or writer or actor's personal take on something, rather than just literally translate it into film.

I don't prefer one over the other because it all depends on the writers.

My Sister's Keeper changed the ending and made it 100x better to me. Lord of the Rings took a lot of artistic liberties for the better.

I thought To Kill A Mockingbird and The Road were pretty close to the books and they are amazing.

Well, it shouldn't "change everything" just for the heck of it, but I definitely prefer adaptations that take the source material as a starting point and go from there.

This week I saw the stage musical adaptation of the 1967 film "Thoroughly Modern Milly". Now, the original film has some great tune in it, and is pretty funny, but it's also s u p e r racist.
Most of the plot revolves around yellow peril and white slavery and innocent white girls being carried off to China for a life of cruel debauchery - you get the gist.
Well, the musical keeps a fair chunk of the plot, but changes some very important details: firstly, the main villain is no longer a Chinese woman being played by a white woman in yellowface - she's now, in-universe, a white woman using yellowface to hide from the cops. Very different tone!
Secondly, her minions, who were originally blank slate thugs with about one spoken line apiece, are now morally conflicted brothers who both don't want to work for the villain, but DO want the money to bring their mother over to America. They get a lot more dialogue (much of it in Chinese with captions projected on a screen above the stage), their own musical number, and happy endings.

I'm good with either tbh, I think I do like a little bit of change, maybe giving a character more to do or re-working a scene to be more visually impressive/stylish, but so long as I still enjoy the story at the end of it I don't mind.

I also don't expect any adaptation to actually be 100% completely accurate because usually the process of turning book/comic to film requires things to be changed or done in different ways, simply because the story-telling medium works differently.

Either or for me, depending. I don't mind changes as long as they work with the spirit of the original or they're fleshing out something that was a bit barebones in the original source.

The only 'adaptation' I loathed was John Carpenter's Vampires (based off John Steakley's Vampires) and only because it very literally kept the MC, killed everyone else off in the first five minutes, which obviously drastically changed the whole plot.

Had I not read and loved the book before the movie came along, objectively I could have enjoyed the movie.

I like a middle ground. I want faithful to the spirit, but I expect that some changes will be made for the change in media. Some things just need changing. Honestly it really just depends. Some just work and some don't. And it really seems to depend for me. It is weird what will work and what doesn't. Like, in spite of the fact that they changed a ton and more and more bugs me, I still love LOTR.

Some ones that bug me that don't bug others as much include Wizard of Oz, The Time Machine (2002 one), The Giver, Prisoner of Azkaban (Goblet of Fire is my favorite of the Potter movies, POA changed too much), The Shining (I agree with secret OP on that one).

Examples of good adaptions might be Dune miniseries (vs. the Dune movie) and the Children of Dune miniseries. The Poirot tv series was mostly good. The new IT part 1 was good. Pet Cemetery, the newer one, was good in spite of one big change.

That depends entirely on the changes. I've seen some that actually improved on the originals and some that completely screwed up.

I liked Silence of the Lambs because it was so close to the book.

I liked the first few seasons of The Magicians because they rearranged pieces form the books into a more interesting and dynamic narrative.

Inspired by the thread above, if you were to adapt any kind of media, what would you change or focus on in your adaptation? Gimme some examples! :D

Recs, ask for your own

(Anonymous) 2019-08-18 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Heyooooo. I am watching The Boys and there is no fic for that. However, it has gotten me craving some fandoms that has a ton of PWP with one dominant, stoic guy with BDE casually making their partner give them sexual favors (consensually). Mod boss AUs tend to have this a lot.
