Do You Believe in Magic?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, no? Why and why not?

Re: Do You Believe in Magic?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Like real magic? Not stage? nah. Never seen it or any proof of it.

Technically they're the same thing. (kinda not really) But either or. I was just watching a documentary on the 'science of magic' and found it very interesting. Most of it was how stage magicians trick the eye to see what they want you to see, and the mechanics behind it. It got me thinking to various rituals and beliefs beck in the day, which in my opinion had some truth to them. Like the Ancient Chinese studied the cracks in the bones of cattle to determine various harvests and when was a good time to attack an enemy, the instructor basically said they more than likely lied to suit the Emperor's needs, but my first thought was that there was some truth in it. (weak bones=weak harvest etc..)

I'm curious about peoples opinions.

Nope. Lack of of proof.

Magic? No. Do I believe in the supernatural, yes a bit to a certain extent. There is something out there beyond our understanding. Spirit exists, we aren't just material beings. And I believe in God. And I think the spiritual world occasionally touches the physical. Occasionally. But do I believe that humans have any sort of control over it, no.

I really, really hope this doesn't come off as snarky, because I swear I don't mean for it to, but it's a question I've never had answered as anything other than "it's different, because reasons."

If you believe in God, then presumably you believe that Jesus performed miracles, right? The walking on water, the turning water to wine, the faith healings, the calming of the storm-- can you explain to me how these things aren't magic? And if they are, how does magic not exist?

I guess to me magic is humans having some kind control or being able to exert control over things through their own power. I'm not sure you can call God exerting control over things he made magic? I mean, TBH I'm not sure which stories I believe really happened and which ones are just meant for lessons. But I don't think you can really call miracles magic since I'd usually say they are God working through people when I think they actually happened (and I'm generally pretty skeptical because 9 times out of 10 either they didn't happen or it was actually just a rare real life occurrence).

"If you believe in God, then presumably you believe that Jesus performed miracles, right?"

Just answering for myself: No, because Christianity is an incoherent theology.

The Bible literally mentions magic and witches. Just another example of so-called Christians not actually reading their precious Holy Book.

I'm not really sure how much of it is literal. I'm not the type to take all the stories literally, or even most of it. I don't recall magic being mentioned Supernatural stuff, yes. One mention of an actual witch in the magic sense, though as I recall she herself was pretty shocked when Samuel's ghost appeared, so I think she was more of a charlatan than anything else. And then just mentions of witchcraft in the religious sense.

Check your baggage. She already said she had differed opinions on the legitimacy of certain stories, and which were written for their values. Spirituality is different from Mysticism, and even further from that is the Supernatural. She made that very clear the first time, don't jump just because you heard the word 'God'.

Re: Do You Believe in Magic?

No. There's no real material or empirical evidence that it exists, so that's not a great start. And philosophically, I don't really believe in any of the structures that would allow magic to exist - I don't believe in an order or structure of the universe, I don't believe in a higher divinity or any kind of universal being or universal force or destiny, I don't believe in essences or intrinsic natures or Platonic entities, I don't believe in any of that. So, no.

What are your thoughts on luck? If you don't mind me asking.

Re: Do You Believe in Magic?

I don't believe there's really such a thing as good luck or bad luck if that's what you mean. Obviously, there's chance and probability and all of that stuff.

That's very interesting, I always find myself swept up in the idea of luck. I really just love hearing different opinions on it.

You sound insanely miserable. I hate people who are purely logical, I've never seen one person who is who wasn't miserable because to them the only thing to life was to eat, breathe, sleep and reproduce. Everything else you needn't bother with.

DA

And you sound ugly and bitter. They answered the question, and gave a very well put response as to why. That's what was asked. Take your bullshit somewhere else.

I don't agree with this, fwiw.

for fuck's sake. Disbelief in the supernatural DOES NOT equal this "nothing is worth anything except eating, breathing, sleeping and breeding" bullshit. If that's all you think there is in us atheists' minds you're pathetic. (and P.S. I want nothing to do with pooping out kids either!)

NAYRT, but much as I sometimes wish that magic/the supernatural/etc existed, I can’t just decide to believe in it because I wish it were true. But I honestly can’t make a connection between “doesn’t believe in magic/religion/etc” and “the only thing to life was to eat, breathe, sleep, and reproduce.”

Just because I don’t believe in (or understand how other people believe in, tbh) magic/religion, doesn’t mean I hold no beliefs or values about life in general or humanity specifically, or that I’m miserable because I believe that if humans want fo be more than machines for turning food into shit and making more humans, it’s up to us to make our lives mean more than that.

Helping other people and living things, treating them with kindness and compassion, taking good care of the environment, making beautiful and interesting things/stories, and leaving the world a better place than if we’d never existed seem like awesome reasons to exist to me, without needing religion or magic to explain them.

And belief in and stories of religion and magic are some of the awesome things people make and do, but not believing in those stories doesn’t make me miserable. I don’t think that belief or lack of belief in the supernatural is necessarily a logic thing. I didn’t arrive at my non-belief by a process of reasoned debate with myself or others. I’ve envied others their sincere belief in magic and/or religion, but I don’t think I’m, idk, better or more logical, or more or less inclined to misery, than people with those beliefs.

If other people use their beliefs, in religion or magic or the lack thereof, as a bludgeon to hurt people that don’t share them, or make the world suck more in general, that’s not cool. But assholes and miserable people can’t all lay claim to one specific set of beliefs, in magic, religion, logic, or whatever else.

I believe in Clarke's Third Law: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

So, yes.

Do I believe in magic, or the supernatural in general? No. There's simply not enough evidence. Do I wish such things existed? Most definitely.
