Wait why are people upset about it, I'm not interested bc I just haven't been grabbed by any aspect of it (except giant badger).

not OP but the only reason I know is that not all previous gen Pokemon will be available to trade into the game, so some Pokemon people have had for YEARS traded from game to game won't be able to join them for this gen

and they have a point (you have 1000 Pokemon now, Game Freak, you saw this coming) and Game Freak didn't handle the upset outcry well, but IMO it's not a reason to write off the whole game

but that's me!

+1

The setting of the United Kingdom attracts me a lot, and the fact it'll allow new players to join in to get "all" the pokemon was actually the bonus for me, but friends of mine vowed not to buy the game because of that. Because pokemon "is about catching them all."

While I could understand fan anger in wanting to keep all of the pokemon they have gained throughout their lives, I also fear this would both be a way of gatekeeping to newbies, and it'd be hell on the developers to create animations and balance for every single pokemon.

I read there were supposedly other pieces of controversy, re-used assets or something, but don't take my word for gospel.

It's also that it just... I'm tired of playing the exact same plot over and over and over. I guarantee you it's going to be, "Help Legendary of the specific game stop the Evil Team that's trying to use them to take over/destroy the world while being a ten-year-old who is going for their gym badges." I'm tired of the gym system to artificially gate content, I'm tired of the same plot we've had going back to at least B&W, and TBH GameFreak is testing how little they have to do before they make a Pokemon game that people won't buy in large amounts.

My complaints aren't just the National Dex, but also that they removed actually interesting things like Megas and Z-Moves for... "The same Pokemon but BIGGER." Two of the revealed "new" mons are just reskinned old mons (Alcreamie is basically Slurpuff, Duraludon is literally Steel Bipedal Gigalith). Things like that.

Complaining about the plot of a Pokemon game is weird though TBH. Nobody has ever expected a different plot, the plot is just an excuse to collect and battle as many Pokemon as you can. It's been that way for the entire run, why would this game suddenly be worse than all the other games before it for sticking with the status quo?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's a complaint I and a lot of people have had for awhile about how it's literally the exact same game with a new shade of paint. And it's especially exasperating after XY where the message was "BUT YOU TOTES DON'T HAVE TO BE A TRAINER WHO GOES AFTER BADGES, LOOK AT YOUR FRIENDS" while... You're forced into being Champion...

Listen, maybe I just want to go on adventures with my best friend mon or three and not worry about collecting badges???

late reply, but I think it would be cool if the Pokemon games had some kind of... well, maybe not a mainline game, but a side game where all sorts of pokemon careers are open to you. Kind of like a Pokemon Fantasy Life, if you've ever played that 3DS game.

From trailers and promotional material, the graphics don't look very good - it was supposedly originally going to be for a handheld system, but they ported it onto the Switch instead. It's also missing some of the quality of life improvements in Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee that a lot of people liked.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen people who played the demo commenting that it's laggy and stuttery in places, in a way that something on the Switch shouldn't be, and that, really, the Dynamox thing isn't very interesting compared to Z-Moves or Megas, too.

I'm also one of those who's going "uh" over Duraludon and Alcremie because uh. Those sure are unoriginal designs.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
You know the Switch is a handheld console, right?

As in compared to the 3DS. The Switch is a console in that it can play bigger/more data heavy games than the 3DS can.

Adults you mean. I'm sure the main target audience will be asking for a copy of this and a Switch Lite.

OP of comment

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Fair point. And I hope they enjoy it!

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh I get why people are upset but so many of the people complaining about it have been so damn overdramatic that I've lost large amounts of sympathy for their viewpoint. Like I saw so many 'my friend gave me his Stunfisk before he DIED of CANCER and not having Stunfisk in Sword and Shield is like KILLING him all over AGAIN.' Personally I don't care that there won't be a National Dex, my pokemon can all live on happily in their 3DS games and people who think the game will suck just because they can't have their precious Charizard for the nth game in a row need to grow up.

Agreed, OP. I'm disappointed that I won't be able to transfer my favorites over, but them's the breaks. I get why they're doing it that way, even if I don't like it. I'm still looking forward to exploring the Galar region with my Sobble, Yamper and Gene Simmons Obstagoon.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, enjoy the unoriginal mons of Alcreamie (Slurpuff reskin, basically) and Steel Bipedal Gigalith in Duraludon. Nevermind the whole Dynamax system vs Megas which is just "the same pokemon BUT BIGGER!!! ISN'T THAT SO COOL???"

I swear, what does Nintendo have to remove to actually get through how lazy they and GameFreak have gotten with the series?

Thanks, I will enjoy it!

Honestly I don't like the decision that has been made, and I do hope that GF will step back on that, going forward. I still think there are no excuses, this isn't a tiny indie company we are talking about, this is a company that owns a multi-media franchise that brings in inordinate amount of money. They can afford to include all the mons.

That said I'm also... Not really upset about it, either? And I'm still super excited about SW/SH and I have pre-ordered the double pack with the steel book and I'm counting the days 'till release.

So I'm with you, OP, while also perfectly understanding why people are so upset *shrug

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's like we're tired of getting less and less will Nintendo sees how little they can give us while still making inordinate amounts of money.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm absolutely aware I'm being led on by the nose by GF and Nintendo, here. I know I'm merely skipping in a trap designed to make me give them my money for something that could've been probably much better than it's going to be.

But I can't bring myself to really get angry about it. I've loved pkmn since Red/Blue, and with each new gen I love to immerse myself in a new world with new mons to discover and just... Pretend I'm a kid again, for a few hours. The world is harsh enough as is and we are all kind of marching toward certain doom with a very brisk pace, so I want to save my rage for something else.

(not to go all what-about-ism, it's just how I personally feel!)

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
It was only a matter of time before we got to this point.

While I can see why many people are unhappy about it (It's perfectly understandable), it honestly doesn't phase me much - My favourite generation, Crystal/Silver/Gold had no way to transfer the pokemon to a GBA, so this isn't a new situation. Further, I'm more into the games for the sake of the worldbuilding and escapism of getting to be The Hero in a cutesy fantasyland, and the fact that it's based on England makes me hardcore drool.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh i never heard of the national dex until this game. I played blue, silver and crystal. Then i couldnt afford a GBA or DS until years later. I skipped a lot of editions.
Personally idgaf about the dex and i am glad this edition will be self-contained. Nonfrustration because of x empty spots in the dex.
