I don't know about BETTER... I do remember using that site a lot until a bunch of new policies made it unbearable.

However when looking for fic of older fandoms it's probably the best place to look. I recently got back into one of my old fandoms and ao3 only had a handful compared to the thousands on ff.net.

Quality of fic is pretty much equal amongst both platforms. ao3 functions better all around but if you want older fandoms then ff.net is worth a visit.
