I like the tagging system on AO3, but I also like FFN (as after the early days of archives, LJ, and quizilla this is where I went for fic).

To save myself the tears, I just turn fics I really like into pdfs using different websites. That is one thing I like about ao3.

What specifically do you like about FFN?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
when I returned to ff.net just to read old fics I found the new super detailed tagging system so confusing

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What possible advantages does it have?? I just can't get my head round this opinion, ffn is impossible to navigate

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, search function on ffn is annoying and isn't really as helpful as ao3. I'd say the only plus side of ffn is it's a lot older and has tons of fic for older fandoms before ao3 became as big as it is.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-01 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
ability to easily search by character names and don't get fics where they're secondary

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
How come, OP? Genuinely curious here, not trying to be snarky. I like both, but I prefer AO3.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about BETTER... I do remember using that site a lot until a bunch of new policies made it unbearable.

However when looking for fic of older fandoms it's probably the best place to look. I recently got back into one of my old fandoms and ao3 only had a handful compared to the thousands on ff.net.

Quality of fic is pretty much equal amongst both platforms. ao3 functions better all around but if you want older fandoms then ff.net is worth a visit.

Can't agree at all. FFN's tagging system is a mess. Last I checked it only allows 2 main characters to be the focal point and people tag things so randomly that it's hard to tell what's shipping and what's general. Never mind that the fics are all crammed on top of one another in the index and it doesn't allow the option to click on or highlight anything once you're reading the fic (sometimes I get distracted so I highlight the portion I last read with my mouse so I know where to come back to). I'll always feel a nostalgic soft spot for FFN, but it just isn't for me anymore.

Only allowing two characters to be tagged is kind of nice sometimes though; if you have a character who is popularly written as the "Good Bro" then their AO3 character tag is filled with fics where they just happen to be in the roommate/supportive friend role, instead of being the central or POV character. People tag EVERYTHING on AO3, since there are no limits, and that can make it equally difficult to tell what's main and what is a one-line reference to a past pairing.

(I am clearly a bitter Sam/Riley shipper)

(Anonymous) 2019-09-09 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this. Plus the way you can't (or couldn't last time I bothered to post there) just edit a fic. You have to upload a text document and then edit that. And if it's after 30 days you can't edit a chapter you have to reupload the text document.

People whine about AO3 as ~confusing. It's simple. Tick a warning box, choose a fandom, add a title and the text. The rest is optional but it makes it much easier for readers to find and decide to read you fic with some good tags of the sort ffn doesn't allow.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I just can't agree. The only time I will go there is if a fic reccer whose taste I trust recommends a fic that's not posted to AO3. In addition to FF.net being a mess to navigate and filter, I just generally feel like my odds of finding a good fic there are much, much lower than on AO3. Maybe that's simply because kudos functions as an almost automatic filtering system on AO3, or maybe FF.net really does have a lower percentage of well-written fics, I have no idea.

I have read some really good fic on FF.net, and I did used to post my own (not so good) fanfic on FF.net as a teen. But ever since I moved on to other sites, FF.net just kind of makes me wince.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
They never allowed explicit fic, did they? Wasn't that what adult ff.net was for? To fill in that gap? I mean, you could post explicit fic on ff.net, but it was a gamble because they could always take it down. This is how I remember it from circa 2004.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2019-08-31 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They allowed explicit fic when I first started reading fanfic around 2001-02. I don't remember why they pulled it.

I don't use AO3 because every time I've checked, there just haven't been any fics (at least, none of the sorts I like) for my preferred fandom there. But my main fandom is small and older and, at least at one time, ff.net was pretty much the only place to find ANY fic. I haven't seen it make the jump to AO3, so neither have I. And for my secondary fandom love, which is much larger and is a property still producing media, I just find AO3 utterly overwhelming to try wading through. I just can't get used to it.

So I mean, in those respects, yeah, ff.net is better, but I think it's a minority preference based on a specific set of circumstances. FF.net definitely has issues, like I really hate the uploading system, really I think just about anything is better than that.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-31 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
FF.net has a few advantages - like, if I search a particular word, I only get stories in the results where the word appears in the title or summary. On AO3, it just seems to be random :c
But only being able to tag one pairing is a drag, and while there is something to be said for brevity the small space for summaries is a bother, and only being able to tag two fandoms in a crossover can also be a drag. It has its limitations, is what I'm saying.

Searching on AO3 tip

[personal profile] goldenfalls 2019-09-01 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Tip: When you're filtering on AO3 and enter something in the Search Within Results field, by default it searches all text fields. Those fields are summary, title, creators, tag, notes, and endnotes. You can specify which field you want to search (e.g. to achieve a similar effect as FFN search, put summary: Harry OR title: Harry (the field names and OR are case sensitive, but your search term isn't) in the Search Within Results field of the filters). Or, you can identify which fields you don't want it to search and just do a general search but then exclude those fields (e.g. Harry -creators: Harry to search for Harry in all fields except for the author names). A bit more involved than FFN's search, but it does give you more granularity/control.

Okay.

I will say it's a lot more useable than other fic archives that were around when it started, but I find AO3's search and default fic display so much more suited to me that I very rarely go to ffn.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-01 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
but how???? it's awful.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-01 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't been to FFN in years, but I seems that when we used to have these FFN vs AO3 discussions, there was more of an even split between who liked what. Now this thread is overwhelmingly in favor of AO3. I don't know if that's AO3 getting better, FFN getting worse, people getting more used to AO3 because that's where their fandoms started or migrated, or there's now a higher percentage if folks in fandom who never used anything but AO3.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-01 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Probably all of that, plus there was a point in time when FFN was so full of malware that even a lot of the diehards broke up with them.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-01 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
For me personally it's that AO3 allows us to download the fics we like... or does FFN have that feature too now? I haven't been there in years, but I still remember the tedious work of copying fics into word documents. x__x

FFN has never been a good fic site. Ever.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-01 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who was banned without warning when the explicit thing went into effect (even though I didn't have anything explicit ON there), I say FFN can take a flying leap.
