I'm a bisexual woman, and probably more attracted to women than men. I'm really tired of all the Tumblr memes mocking straight women for their sexuality. And I'm tired of the way people there seem to expect that I will love doing that and am probably actually straight if I don't.

I KNOW straight people aren't oppressed for being straight, but it just seems like another way to sneer at women/teenage girls for liking literally anything.

And the memes aren't even consistent. They used to assume straight women all like macho jocks (with a nasty MRA-ish undertone implying that straight women who have been abused basically just got what they asked for dating masculine guys). But now the latest thing seems to be patronizing confusion toward straight women who like androgynous/less masculine guys? What's up with that?

Oh, and I should add that those memes specify straight women, to the point that the poster will go all "oh my god I you can't even read I was talking about STRAIGHt women" etc. if a woman chimes in with "I'm bi and I like androgynous guys."

So it's not a "he's obviously gay, you dummy" thing. It's somehow weird or mock-worthy for a straight woman to be into that kind of guy, but not for a bi woman. I don't get it.

I wish there was a way to criticize hegemony and talk about it honestly without being cruel to people who are trying to exist within hegemony. Unfortunately.... if there is a way, it doesn't seem like people are aware of it.

And the other frustrating thing about it is that, like. Ultimately, you can find a reason to sneer at anything. So there's this infinite regress. The sneering has no bottom, it's an unlimited abyss. Any point of view that you adopt can ultimately be subject to the same kind of sneering and criticism at some point. It's very nihilistic.

Yep. On Tumblr, it always leads to bisexual women getting sneered at, not for liking men, but for not "getting" the Official Rules of Being Bisexual. Which all bisexual people are apparently born understanding, except for the idiots that don't.

Hard fucking same. That sort of shit pisses me off so much, oh my god. I've unfollowed and blocked people for it, but every once in a while some shit like that drifts into my field of awareness, and it makes me mad every time.
I'm also a bisexual woman, though I'm more interested in women, and every time I see any of that shit directed at straight women I'm just like, "So you're a potential enemy..." because let's be real here, the people throwing straight women under the bus would do the same to us if they thought they could get away with it. Today, they can't. Tomorrow, who knows?

I'm glad I've seemed to miss all of that. Anon below reminds me that straight women are damned if they do or don't, but we shouldn't be insulting or pitying women for being straight so much as encouraging men to adapt to modern ways of being useful. It's not enough to go make money and provide, you need to be emotionally present and helpful at home.

IME first they made fun of straight women for liking conventionally attractive men, the ur-examples like Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, because that's so cliche and sheeple-y. Now they make fun of straight women for liking non conventionally attractive men like Benedict Cumberbatch and Adam Driver, because ew they're not attractive.

As if attractive isn't subjective anyway.

gross MRA types are insecure losers who are jealous of every kind of man a woman could possibly be attracted to. whatever memes they churn out are only a reflection of themselves and their own insecurity.

Those memes are not made by MRA guys most of the time though.
