He sucks and is a major issue for me getting into the show. Probably the single biggest issue. Really a lot of the drama just feels a little... cheap, especially in the episodes I've watched so far, but he's by far the biggest example.

A Taskmaster secret! I remember being annoyed by that too, but overall series 3 was the least memorable series for me so meh.

Text: The Hornblower miniseries has almost always been my main fandom, and has a special place in my heart.

But I haven’t rewatched the series in probably a decade, and I’m a little afraid to, in case it hasn’t aged well (a somewhat founded fear, since that happened to another show I enjoyed from the same era).

Furthermore, the odds are high that if the series ever started being made again, it would be a mess, and fail to capture what made the original series so special.

And yet, if you told me today that it was coming back, with Ioan Gruffudd in the title role?

I'm not familiar with this series, but I'm with you. I just recently read a book where the one character who would theoretically be an appropriate love interest for the main character, there seemed to be no romantic interest from either end, and I was impressed. I thought wow, it's rare that you see a book with a female protagonist and they don't feel the need to give her a love interest. But nope, there had to be a couple random paragraphs tacked onto the end that she ended up with him (even though neither of them seemed into each other up until that point, but he was described as "shy" so I guess that was supposed to be an explanation for why their earlier scenes were the way they were). It was just lame.
