My sister lost her kids because she tested positive for pot. She has to take 5 weeks of parenting classes to get them back. At least that is what she said. Through a series of other fucked up, one of my nieces is in a group home and the other (who has some mental disability) is staying at a family friend's.

That niece caseworker wants to send her to be fostered by us. But my sister is across the country so it would be at least a thousand dollars to get her to us. And will it only be for a week? I honestly don't want to deal with that. I feel terrible about that but I don't think I can handle taking care of her. I have no kids of my own and never want any.

Sending the kid across the country for a week sounds ridiculous. Sending the kid out of the jurisdiction of the local social worker sounds....totally illegal. Or just really not a wise idea. I'd feel the same, anon.

Sounds like it'll just happen again, so I'd probably talk to the caseworker to find the child a more stable and permanent housing. Do you even know the kid at all? Just because you're related doesn't mean you should be taking care of your sisters kids. The kid sounds like she's going through too much already, so moving her across country on top of that for a week probably wouldn't be the best thing for her, I'd say. That really sucks though.

I was close to her like 8 years ago when I lived near her. Have not really talked to her much since then.

I think sending a kid across the country for only a week sounds nuts and not a good use of anyone's time or resources.
