What are your most amazing/hilarious/memorable/terrible con stories?

Con as in convention, not concert.

Share away! I love me a good con story.

I’ve only been to one con and that was Anime Expo. I went for just a day because I wanted to try it out and actually had a lot of fun. I got some cool merch, got some autographs, and the wait wasn’t even that bad, but that’s probably ‘cause I went on a Sunday. I decided to check out the Artist Alley and that’s where things started to go wrong. It was like twenty degrees warmer there and we were all pressed chest to butt trying to get through the narrow aisles. I saw some really nice art, but I could barely make my way to the booths because it was so crowded. In one particular aisle, the line came to a complete standstill and, because I'm so short, I couldn’t even see why. Everybody was sweating and I was suddenly very aware of everyone’s BO. Then somebody cut a fart and oh my god, it was the worst smelling fart in the history of farts, but I seriously couldn’t get out because the crowd was so thick and nobody was moving. I said, “Excuse me”, about half a dozen times so people could let me through, but when nobody did, I started shoving. I’m not proud of it, but the smell was that unbearable and I left the con as soon as I got out of the line.

I was at an anime convention when The Coventoneers were there, (before they got banned and tryed to sneak their way in for fun). I tried to low-key stalk them since they had a television camera and everything, and was in the background of a few shots. Not very interesting, but it was cool at the time.

What have you been listening to lately, FS?

Started listening to a couple new podcasts.

Art of the Score and The Soundtrack Show. Both are about OSTs.

Casefile True Crime and Obscura. Both are true crime shows.

Yesterday I listened to Danny Huston on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, today I listened to Dead Can Dance and a short video about Tulku Tsori Rinpoche.

Been listening to Taylor Swift's new album a lot. Not front to back, but there's a good six or seven songs I've got on rotation.

I spent all summer listening to Michelle Branch's 2017 album Hopeless Romantic, and being unreasonably pleased that it's actually good.

Bit worn out on pop music now though. Gotta transition into something that feels more...fall.

I don't listen to any of those, but i *have* been watching Ken Burns. The Civil War, The Roosevelts, Country Music, Vietnam.....

I really like listening to all the voice actors, and am learning some interesting stuff.

I've been going back and revisiting one of my favorite bands, Oingo Boingo, lately :). Perfect music to get into the fall mood.

I've also been playing a lot of Vampire Weekend. "This Life" has been my big summer song-I love it so much.

I'm listening through all the Star Trek audio dramas on my audio book app.

The ones from the 80s and 90s are quite ambitious with sound effects and music, and adapted to audio (i.e. abridged.)

I wish that trend would come back! I much prefer that over the modern-day 12 hour long straight readings.

So far Jon de Lancie and James Doohan are my favorite narrators. I'm saving the Shatner ones for last. Have to work up to them. (I have a Shatner-aversion, but hopefully he tones down his Shatner-ness for the readings.)

CrowsEyeProductions

Historical channel about clothing and styles. They don't have a ton of videos, but everything has such high production values.

Funny or die... I admit there's been a lot of die lately, but I will never not enjoy Zack Morris is Trash.

Snake Discovery - a very perky woman teaches us all about snakes and other animals. Lots of cute baby snakes hatching. Hate snakes? Not for long! For more reptiles, try The Fish Whisperer's turtle feeding videos.

Ask a Mortician - she covers everything from the basics of how cremation works, to videos about the Donner Party and the dead of Mount Everest, to the likes of "Corpse Phallus Capers of Rasputin and Napoleon" because someone hard to.

Bernadette Banner - I'm not into historical costuming, but I will happily watch 40 minutes of this woman talk about her research, design, fitting, and construction processes. It's very soothing.

Speaking of soothing, try Hanabira for crafting if cute little dollhouse vignettes with soft music and no talking. If you want talking, try Luke Towan, who builds model railroad-style miniature scenes. It's fascinating to watch.

When I want something where I don't have to look at the screen much, say while making dinner or washing dishes, I watch the various fandom news videos from Fandom Entertainment (the Honest Trailers people - I love Honest Trailers, too). They're like podcasts but with a camera. I especially like Charting with Dan and am enjoying the "Meet a Cat" segment they are doing at the end of those as a countdown ("meowndown") to the Cats movie coming out.

The Bon Appetit videos where Claire makes gourmet versions of branded candies, cereal, snack foods, etc.

Jenny Nicholson. I was originally turned off by hearing that she "just talks about stuff" because that sounded boring, but it turns out she talks about fannish stuff and is HILARIOUS. I have no interest in theme parks but could listen to her talk about the history of various Disneyland rides for hours.

Recently discovered Christine McConnell who just makes amazing things. Apparently she had a Netflix show that got cancelled so now she's freelancing it on YouTube. Not a lot of content up yet, but what's there is cool.

Fandom gripes, disappointments, etc. (share yours)

(Anonymous) 2019-09-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I’m a consummate lurker. But I finally made a tumblr after all these years. I made it an OTP-centric tumblr because this one OTP is the main fandom thing I’m into right now.

I’ve always wanted a pretty blog of my own, and I’ve never had one, so I really took the time and made my blog pretty, with a banner I made and a cool icon and everything. I was kinda proud of it.

But now that I have this tumblr, I’ve discovered there is almost nothing I want to reblog, and no one I really vibe with. Almost everybody on tumblr ships this pairing completely differently than I do, and I’m just not interested in their version of the ship at all. Spending time on tumblr actually makes me ship my OTP less.

It’s such a letdown. I’d finally taken the leap and was all set to actually engage with fandom. And now I’m just…there.

Trivial stuff that's BS

(Anonymous) 2019-09-18 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Open" cardigans for women. They're cardigans you can't keep closed, because they don't have buttons. This thing that's supposed to keep me warm can't be fastened in front. This is right up there with skirts/pants that don't have pockets. You don't see this bullshit foisted on men, dammit!
