People don't like the idea that she cares about the weakest members of our society, that is, the unborn children. After all, a woman clearly has the right to choose what happens to someone else's body, so long as it's growing inside of her, even if her life isn't in any danger at all.

People don't like the fact that she follows the constitution and the people even when they disagree with her personal views. I mean, heaven forbid we have a woman who, if Roe v Wade were overturned, would let the people of her state decide how they wanted to proceed with abortion laws. "...it would not be up to the governor to unilaterally ban anything. It would be up to the people of Alaska to discuss and decide how we would like our society to reflect our values." That's from the Anchorage Daily News, 22 October 2006.

People don't like that she never banned books. Have you seen the list of books she supposedly banned? Some weren't even written when she was in position to ban books from the Wasilla Library.

People don't like that she's actually knowledgeable about Alaskan issues, like allowing people to use aircraft as part of predator-control in areas of Alaska where you can't just go to Wal*Mart and get a few steaks for dinner, but you actually have to hunt it yourself, and a high predator population means less food for you and your family.

They don't like that she knows that permanent global warming is a myth generated by the fact that the scientists who claim the Earth is warming up not only are taking temperatures in the middle of cities, which by their very nature get hotter than average, but also claimed we were headed for the next Ice Age as little as twenty years ago. In fact, a lot of suburban and rural areas are reporting far cooler temperatures than they've had within the past century.

They don't like that she cares about her people surviving and thriving more than she does about an environment that's remained largely unchanged despite the more industrialised human presence. Don't you know, animals are more important than human beings?

They don't like that she didn't really have anything to do with her former brother-in-law not getting fired, and that it was mostly her husband who tried to pressure the commisionner into firing Trooper Wooten. Who, by the way, despite tasing his own child, is still a state trooper.

However, this is all just my opinion based on my research. I advise you do your own. My best advice would be to start here. (http://www.ontheissues.org/sarah_Palin.htm) It's a very neutral place, and provides sources. Then expand outwards. I'd avoid places like the Daily Kos and Townhall, and stick to verified news outlets like the Washington Times or Alaska state newspapers or any of the alphabet soup news. As far as neutral blogging, zombietime is a good place to go, although it's more of a photoblog and doesn't focus entirely on the election.

My last advice is don't trust anything or anyone that won't reveal it's sources. I've given you mine, so I hope you'll take my opinions into your thoughts as well, and not just focus on the vitriolic ones you've received already.

I'm sorry people have jumped on you for not being knowledgeable about politics. Even though they are important, they aren't the be all and end all of existence, and if you've got a lot of other things happening, I know things that don't seem immediately relevant can kind of take a back-burner, especially if they're fairly sensitive topics.

(By the way, Palin's a very tough, strong, independent, self-made woman. She didn't ride on her husband's political career to get where she is; she did it herself. She doesn't apologise for her beliefs, and she doesn't back down. She's the sort of person you either love or dislike but have a grudging sort of respect for. Of course, then you add in her being a Republican and it all goes to Hell and hatred from the "tolerant, accepting" Democratic Party. Never mind the long history of the Democratic Party as being for bigoted white males.)

Wow, someone supporting her exists on the internet? :o

I can't tell you how grateful I am for the time and effort you've put into this comment. ♥ Thank you for offering a counter-perspective on Palin so that I, and others passing through, can get a firm grasp on both sides of the argument. This really helps! :]

Mate, say what you like about Sarah Palin, but when you're saying something as out-there as denying global warming, I don't trust your sources for anything. Your research on the internet is not as good as that of the expert scientists who've dedicated their lives to studying the climate. But tell me this. If global temperatures are cooling, why is the Arctic and Antarctic ice melting, and melting so fast?

Oh, hell. I still can't help picking you up on a few points:

and that it was mostly her husband who tried to pressure the commisionner into firing Trooper Wooten

Even if it were true that she wasn't the one pressuring (because that report on her wasn't exactly saying she had nothing to do with the matter, was it? and I've yet to hear evidence to the contrary) - whyever would her husband have so much say in the matter? If he's allowed that much influence just for being her husband, Sarah Palin isn't safe to have in any government. It's arguably even worse than if it was directly her fault.

They don't like that she cares about her people surviving and thriving more than she does about an environment that's remained largely unchanged despite the more industrialised human presence. Don't you know, animals are more important than human beings?

I don't know exactly what you're talking about here, but you've forgotten something. Humans are animals.

People don't like the idea that she cares about the weakest members of our society, that is, the unborn children. After all, a woman clearly has the right to choose what happens to someone else's body, so long as it's growing inside of her, even if her life isn't in any danger at all.

It's not someone else's body. Women do *gasp* have bodies of their own, to be used for their own purposes. You do not sign over your rights as a human being when you become pregnant. Until a foetus has developed past a certain point, it's absolutely a woman's own body she's making the decisions about. Being pregnant is not a minor thing. A foetus past that point of development or thereabouts is an unborn child only after then - and they are, in fact, protected. Before then? A woman is perfectly entitled to get rid of what is, put in the harshest manner, an unwanted parasite harming her body.

In politics, unfortunately, it's often who you know. This is true for ALL political figures, and makes the entire lot of them dangerous, not just Sarah Palin. Just pointing that out.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
A fair point. Nearly anyone is risky, to some degree. Though I'd like to imagine that there are some who have at least a bit of integrity sometimes (haven't found them yet...).

But, I'd say that if this particular thing is true of Sarah Palin, it confirms that she's dangerous. And there are differing degrees to which people allow themselves to be influenced. Allowing a husband to meddle in things like that is something pretty outrageous on that scale, IMO. If someone is being elected on their perceived merits, it sucks if they're so weak willed that they'll let their spouse dictate everything if they're pushed.

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for giving a sane argument supporting her. It's very nice to see one of those. People on both sides tend to go a bit crazy during election years, as you've probably noticed, and it's nice to see someone with strong opinions who can still keep a cool head (lord knows I can't). Especially since I am almost entirely neutral on Palin, I appreciate seeing both sides of the argument represented for once.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped reading after your first paragraph because fetuses aren't "members of society."

Women, on the other hand, are. And if you are one, please be ashamed of yourself, and I hope that if you and people like you ever succeed in making abortion illegal, that you get raped. :)

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but wow! I have to words to express how I feel about what you said! Because you misused the word child, a prepubescent between the ages 2 and 12, and well, if I don't want it there, I'm getting rid of it. It's not my fault it's so underdeveloped that it can't survive outside of the womb.

Yeah, too bad Palin would probably ban abortion the first chance she got, going against the wishes of those who do support it. Leave it legal and safe so that those who want an abortion can get one without resorting to self-harm or wire coat hangers. If you don't like want one, don't get one. Wow, a simple solution!

Also, if the Inuits and other native tribes don't need aircraft to hunt animals, then everyone else doesn't need them.

Palin is also horribly ignorant, she can't discuss what she was asked in debates and goes completely off topic because she doesn't know more than what she is told to say, and she stands for everything I'm against.
