116. Why would people hate her in the first place? Is she too much like a normal "stereotypical" american wife? ...idk
And wtf, politics fandom in general. Does not compute. :|

(Anonymous) 2008-10-17 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would people hate her? Are you fucking kidding me? She tried to make rape victims pay for their own medical exams and rape test kits. She's a foamingly hateful nutcase and she's stupid.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you believe what the Daily Kos and media spoon feed you. It's called a STATEWIDE policy, and they either charged the insurance or the hospital wrote it off. Not one rape victim ever physically saw the cost of it. The only foamingly hateful stupid nutcase I see is you.

She supports censoring books at public libraries, she's against women's rights, she's anti-environment, she supported making rape victims pay for their own rape kits, she chases wolves in airplanes until they tire and then shoots them. What more reason do you need?

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
This, plus her general ignorance.

I'm rather amazed that anyone would need to ask this question, and I'm not even in the US.

Seriously.

cyclicality, you don't even need to follow the election to know the horrors of Sarah Palin. Most people that even don't live in the US know what a scumbag she is.

Does my question really convey such ignorance?

There are things other than the election that I follow, of course. Happy things where people aren't always at each others' throats and calling each other names. Sorry if I don't find such passion in watching the government implode on itself.

I'd have liked a nicer response than "LOL STUPID, GO READ THE PAPER", but I guess that's too much to ask.

Thank you for taking the time to type all that out and clarify these things, I really appreciate it.

Moreover, thank you for being thorough and rather unbiased in your presentation of the facts and not belittling me in doing so. I'm glad you and some of the above commenters could respectfully answer my question.

Before my first comment, I wasn't hearing both sides of the Palin issue; now that I have, I'm that much wiser. That's all I really wanted in the first place. :)

Re: 116

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
From what people have already explained to you, I think you will know what I mean when I say that the reason people hate her is that she is about as far from normal as possible. I tend to feel terribly insulted that McCain chose her as a running made -- presumably because he thought that would get him the female vote, as she was pretty much the worst choice he could have made unless he really thought the fact that she has boobs would mean that most women wouldn't care at all about her stance on any of the issues. Unfortunately, it's backfiring because the more that comes out about her, the more it's revealed she's pretty much a sorry excuse for a woman (not only the rape kit thing, but one thing she doesn't like to tell people is that when she says she doesn't want any abortion to be legal, ever... she is also part of a group of Republicans who are trying to get some contraceptives named as "abortion"), not a very good person, and DEFINITELY not the kind of person who should be put near a position of such power. I wouldn't want her as the principal of my school, much less the VP and potential President of my country.

Mostly, though, I think people are pissed at you simply because most people are assuming you're of the age to vote, and the idea that someone is going to be voting in a couple of weeks and has no idea about issues that are so important is breath takingly horrible. Fate of the nation, etc. It might not be pretty, but the election really is something that needs to be paid attention to -- the trick is to listen to all the mudslinging, then actually look further into it and find out what's true and what's just a bunch of made-up vitriol.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
People don't like the idea that she cares about the weakest members of our society, that is, the unborn children. After all, a woman clearly has the right to choose what happens to someone else's body, so long as it's growing inside of her, even if her life isn't in any danger at all.

People don't like the fact that she follows the constitution and the people even when they disagree with her personal views. I mean, heaven forbid we have a woman who, if Roe v Wade were overturned, would let the people of her state decide how they wanted to proceed with abortion laws. "...it would not be up to the governor to unilaterally ban anything. It would be up to the people of Alaska to discuss and decide how we would like our society to reflect our values." That's from the Anchorage Daily News, 22 October 2006.

People don't like that she never banned books. Have you seen the list of books she supposedly banned? Some weren't even written when she was in position to ban books from the Wasilla Library.

People don't like that she's actually knowledgeable about Alaskan issues, like allowing people to use aircraft as part of predator-control in areas of Alaska where you can't just go to Wal*Mart and get a few steaks for dinner, but you actually have to hunt it yourself, and a high predator population means less food for you and your family.

They don't like that she knows that permanent global warming is a myth generated by the fact that the scientists who claim the Earth is warming up not only are taking temperatures in the middle of cities, which by their very nature get hotter than average, but also claimed we were headed for the next Ice Age as little as twenty years ago. In fact, a lot of suburban and rural areas are reporting far cooler temperatures than they've had within the past century.

They don't like that she cares about her people surviving and thriving more than she does about an environment that's remained largely unchanged despite the more industrialised human presence. Don't you know, animals are more important than human beings?

They don't like that she didn't really have anything to do with her former brother-in-law not getting fired, and that it was mostly her husband who tried to pressure the commisionner into firing Trooper Wooten. Who, by the way, despite tasing his own child, is still a state trooper.

However, this is all just my opinion based on my research. I advise you do your own. My best advice would be to start here. (http://www.ontheissues.org/sarah_Palin.htm) It's a very neutral place, and provides sources. Then expand outwards. I'd avoid places like the Daily Kos and Townhall, and stick to verified news outlets like the Washington Times or Alaska state newspapers or any of the alphabet soup news. As far as neutral blogging, zombietime is a good place to go, although it's more of a photoblog and doesn't focus entirely on the election.

My last advice is don't trust anything or anyone that won't reveal it's sources. I've given you mine, so I hope you'll take my opinions into your thoughts as well, and not just focus on the vitriolic ones you've received already.

I'm sorry people have jumped on you for not being knowledgeable about politics. Even though they are important, they aren't the be all and end all of existence, and if you've got a lot of other things happening, I know things that don't seem immediately relevant can kind of take a back-burner, especially if they're fairly sensitive topics.

(By the way, Palin's a very tough, strong, independent, self-made woman. She didn't ride on her husband's political career to get where she is; she did it herself. She doesn't apologise for her beliefs, and she doesn't back down. She's the sort of person you either love or dislike but have a grudging sort of respect for. Of course, then you add in her being a Republican and it all goes to Hell and hatred from the "tolerant, accepting" Democratic Party. Never mind the long history of the Democratic Party as being for bigoted white males.)

[identity profile] cyclicality.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, someone supporting her exists on the internet? :o

I can't tell you how grateful I am for the time and effort you've put into this comment. ♥ Thank you for offering a counter-perspective on Palin so that I, and others passing through, can get a firm grasp on both sides of the argument. This really helps! :]

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Mate, say what you like about Sarah Palin, but when you're saying something as out-there as denying global warming, I don't trust your sources for anything. Your research on the internet is not as good as that of the expert scientists who've dedicated their lives to studying the climate. But tell me this. If global temperatures are cooling, why is the Arctic and Antarctic ice melting, and melting so fast?

Oh, hell. I still can't help picking you up on a few points:

and that it was mostly her husband who tried to pressure the commisionner into firing Trooper Wooten

Even if it were true that she wasn't the one pressuring (because that report on her wasn't exactly saying she had nothing to do with the matter, was it? and I've yet to hear evidence to the contrary) - whyever would her husband have so much say in the matter? If he's allowed that much influence just for being her husband, Sarah Palin isn't safe to have in any government. It's arguably even worse than if it was directly her fault.

They don't like that she cares about her people surviving and thriving more than she does about an environment that's remained largely unchanged despite the more industrialised human presence. Don't you know, animals are more important than human beings?

I don't know exactly what you're talking about here, but you've forgotten something. Humans are animals.

People don't like the idea that she cares about the weakest members of our society, that is, the unborn children. After all, a woman clearly has the right to choose what happens to someone else's body, so long as it's growing inside of her, even if her life isn't in any danger at all.

It's not someone else's body. Women do *gasp* have bodies of their own, to be used for their own purposes. You do not sign over your rights as a human being when you become pregnant. Until a foetus has developed past a certain point, it's absolutely a woman's own body she's making the decisions about. Being pregnant is not a minor thing. A foetus past that point of development or thereabouts is an unborn child only after then - and they are, in fact, protected. Before then? A woman is perfectly entitled to get rid of what is, put in the harshest manner, an unwanted parasite harming her body.

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for giving a sane argument supporting her. It's very nice to see one of those. People on both sides tend to go a bit crazy during election years, as you've probably noticed, and it's nice to see someone with strong opinions who can still keep a cool head (lord knows I can't). Especially since I am almost entirely neutral on Palin, I appreciate seeing both sides of the argument represented for once.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped reading after your first paragraph because fetuses aren't "members of society."

Women, on the other hand, are. And if you are one, please be ashamed of yourself, and I hope that if you and people like you ever succeed in making abortion illegal, that you get raped. :)

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but wow! I have to words to express how I feel about what you said! Because you misused the word child, a prepubescent between the ages 2 and 12, and well, if I don't want it there, I'm getting rid of it. It's not my fault it's so underdeveloped that it can't survive outside of the womb.

Yeah, too bad Palin would probably ban abortion the first chance she got, going against the wishes of those who do support it. Leave it legal and safe so that those who want an abortion can get one without resorting to self-harm or wire coat hangers. If you don't like want one, don't get one. Wow, a simple solution!

Also, if the Inuits and other native tribes don't need aircraft to hunt animals, then everyone else doesn't need them.

Palin is also horribly ignorant, she can't discuss what she was asked in debates and goes completely off topic because she doesn't know more than what she is told to say, and she stands for everything I'm against.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-18 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate Sarah Palin and I wouldn't punch her in the face if I saw her. Actually, i'd probably shake her hand. I don't think she's stupid, either, but I do think she lacks common sense at times. Shockingly, I say all of this as a woman and as a democrat who will be voting for Obama/Biden. I know, I know... What the hell is wrong with me? And before anyone asks, i'd love to give you the drugs that i'm on, except I don't have any drugs because i'm not taking any.

I have to say, though, before anyone crucifies me, that I strongly disagree with her stances on alot of issues, such as the economy, abortion, foreign policy and what not. I also find her overall incompetence, ignorance, and divisiveness for someone who is running for vice president and may very well be our next president if God forbid something were to happen to John McCain if he gets elected, horrifying. Not to mention mind-boggling. Yes, i'd shake her hand, but that doesn't mean that I want her anywhere near the White House.

I don't know... I just don't think either side trying to demonize each other gets anyone anywhere, and I honestly don't think any of the four candidates are bad people. I just strongly, albeit respectively disagree with two of them.

People don't like that she never banned books. Have you seen the list of books she supposedly banned? Some weren't even written when she was in position to ban books from the Wasilla Library.

That's actually true. I believe she asked about banning books in regards to a policy question she had, but she never actually tried to get any books banned.

When a group of scientists say that the consequences of global warming (which is real and has been proven) might be extensive and permanent if we don't start taking immediate action than i'm inclined to agree with them, seeing as to how they're scientists and all. Sarah Palin did say global warming is real and that we should try to find a resolution, but she said it doesn't matter what caused it, which I think is weird. I mean, whenever you have a problem you have to know the cause of the problem in order to fix it. That's just common sense.

Anyway, I think if you're old enough to vote then you definitely should - regardless of who you vote for. *coughobamabidencough* And I can totally relate to being put off by the mudslinging and negativity from both campaigns, but as important as it is for everyone to vote, I think it's equally important to stay informed about the candidates and about the issues. Knowledge is power, afterall.
