Why?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I prefer spinning my own version, because (with only one exception) canon has never done it the way I wanted.

That makes sense. I'm not really into shipping anymore, but back when I used to my ships would sometimes be teased but they'd never become canon. It sucked, but I imagine having your ship soured by bad writing could be worse.

I feel that. I'm tired of the "real" writers flubbing the shit out of romances. Not all of them, of course... just the ones that have obvious buildup and then... it falls flat or else the couple MUST break up! If I wanted that kind of thing, I would have kept watching soap operas.

I'm the OP of the original comment. My reasons are basically what others have said in that I prefer my version of tge romance. Also I rarely see canon romances done well.

Same

Absolutely, I like it so much more better when I can imagine my own scenarios, and not have them spoiled by canon!

I do like it when my ships become canon, but sometimes, the writers screw up the characters and it makes me wish their relationship had never become canon at all. That's when I prefer the noncanon version in my head.

I think I've been slowly brainwashed by ship wars to the point that I just want validation against the haters, dammit

(Anonymous) 2019-09-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The closest I've ever come to a ship being canon is it being ambiguous onscreen, and then the showrunner coming out later and saying, no, they're just friends, so on the one hand I want a ship to become canon just to see what it's like.

But on the other hand, I agree with you. It seems most writers (at least of stuff I watch) are awful at romance, so I'd rather not give them the opportunity to screw it up.

I'm with you.

I'm good with either. I've got some ships I'd prefer not to be canon, and I've got plenty I love because they are, as well as several that likely won't ever be but it doesn't stop me from enjoying them.

I'm the OP of the original comment. I much prefer to imagine my own version than anything canon might do. IMO romance is rarely done well in fiction.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I've only ever had a ship become canon once (Asami/Korra in Legend of Korra) and that was in the last seconds of the canon. So that was great! But I'm otherwise dubious about canon ships for similar reasons.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Most of my ships are canon almost from the very beginning. (A lot of my fandoms are m/m and f/f romance novels.) I only get into them if canon does them right. :-)
