It’s depressing to me. I finally thought, here’s a fandom where surely there CAN’T be that many ship wars or divisive fighting, but people just keep proving me wrong. I’m getting jaded. I’m beginning to truly believe that fandoms can’t exist without trying to tear each other’s throats out over totally inconsequential bullshit.

You would think so, but even here we had our round of "how dare you call them gay, when there's this line from the book" vs. "don't you know what gay coding is, sweaty!"

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sweaty OR sweetie?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
"sweaty" is "sweetie" with extra condescension.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Whenever I see someone use 'sweaty' I think they're an idiot who can't spell and aren't worth listening to anyway. Which is how I assume it started rather than "you're drenched in perspiration"; that or someone was mocking the 'sweetie ur wrong' and the idiots tried to claim it unironically.

You have to be delusional to read "people often assumed Aziraphale was gay, but they are wrong about it" and think of it as "gay coding".

And then those same people complain that Dumbledore's "we were closer than brothers!" line wasn't explicit enough about his sexuality and bash Rowling over this, while praising Gaiman to high heavens. Male privilege is one hell of a drug!

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Not that I'm one of those who consider Good Omens amazing representation of anything, but to be fair that line is from the book written 30 years ago. Gaiman seems to have approached the much more recent TV version a little differently, adding a break-up scene that an extra even comments on in case the viewer didn't pick up on it, identifying Aziraphale's "discreet gentleman's club" as an actual historical gay club in case THAT was unclear, etc.

1. Television production != book. Book != television production.

2. You do realize that we're talking about the author/producer who has developed over a dozen explicitly LGBTQ characters across multiple media in 30 years, including several that are currently in production this year.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
SA: I mean, for fuck's sake "Hold Me" (Hellblazer) was one of the first comics from a mainstream publisher to directly deal with the irrational phobia of touching HIV+ gay men in 1990.

But, Good Omens (the teleplay) is a story about two people who gradually come to realize that the forbidden bonds they have with each other are something worth defying thousands of years of history to affirm. Arguing that we can't queer that metaphor probably isn't a hill you want to die on.

Most ship wars tend to be pretty silly in general. Why can't we discuss things without spilling blood?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I read that as spilling food.

I always hear that people only hate Carl because he gets in the way of their preferred Alex/Bob ship when other people ship Carl/Bob.

But for me, sometimes I genuinely loathe Carl without shipping Bob with anyone, or end up shipping Alex/Bob and/or Bob/“Anyone but Carl” not because I love those pairings, but because at least Bob/Not Carl shippers hate Carl as much as I do.

And I’m not gonna have a cordial discussion with someone who ships Carl/Bob or loves Carl with all their heart. Or if I do, it’ll be a discussion that doesn’t involve shipping or Carl. I roll my eyes at shippers who just blindly hate all pairings that ship one half of their OTP with someone else, though. I have a couple OTPs where both halves of the couple are routinely shipped with other characters by lots of people, and it’s nbd.

That's not the issue with this fandom though. It's THEY ARE GAY MEN AND IF YOU DON'T SAY THEY'RE IN A SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP YOU'RE A HOMOPHOBE.
They're an angel and a demon, the latter shown as a snake and a woman at different times in the show so human gender isn't fixed for them. They don't kiss but it's clear they are, after 6k years of forbidden friendship, deeply in love of some kind. But that's not enough for the current LG crowd, it's 'queerbaiting' if two men care about each other and don't say I love you or screw.

I'm not heavily involved in this fandom at all but see things through mutuals. From the amount of "I like all of it!" secrets we've had recently about this book/show I thought that it must surely be quite rare there are ship (or interpretation of ship) wars in the fandom. That's disappointing.

Having said that, most of the stuff that is on my personal social media/tumblr dash does seem to be positive about the "choose your own interpretation" thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-23 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so mad about this, it's all so stupid. I can't even comprehend, like if people want to argue with each other of random bullshit then that's fine, but leave the actors and creators out it, they don't owe anything to anyone.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
If people weren't writing novel length metas about how GAY they are and how anyone who doesn't ship them is a homophobe, how Gaiman's a homophobe, calling Gaiman a coward on his own twitter feed, and responding with "anything not sexual is JUST FRIENDSHIP AND WE HAVE TOO MUCH M/M FRIENDSHIP ALREADY" with all the nonbinary and ace denial that implies there wouldn't a problem. Just write their smut and tag it, and everyone else can write their non-sexy love fic and tag them and everyone can be happy.
And agreed definitely leave the actors and creators out of it ffs.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I can't stand those type of shipping wars and try to stay away from them as best I can.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Leaving aside the whole 'which specific flavor of non-straight are they' and whether or not it even makes any sense for them to use labels when they're not human...

Is there anyone that doesn't think they're in love with each other? I've only watched four episodes and it seems suuuuuuper obvious to me.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
There's the 'they're platonically romantic because friends for 6000 years' camp, which despite not what I read into it, I consider a fully valid camp to be in.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT—how is platonic romance supposed to work? I always assumed that a relationship could be platonic or romantic, but not both.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
not the person you replied to (but the person they replied to)

IDK, I feel like those are contradictory terms. Of course, there's "romantic friendship" which is kind of a gray area, not completely friendship or romance, but somewhere in between, but "platonic romance" doesn't make sense to me. (I guess if you think about it those terms are basically the same thing, but they're different in my brain for whatever reason.)

Not sure if this even makes any sense, I just woke up from a nap and don't feel like I'm entirely awake yet.

I think they love each other. Whether or not they're in love is up for debate and I think either interpretation is valid.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Same, anon, same.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-24 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so happy I've missed all this drama! Everyone I follow just seems happy to wallow in their obvious love, in whatever form it takes.
