You mean like... apart from how weird and out of character it was?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Your parents don't tease you? huh.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

My parents tease me (and my brother) but now that I think about, never ever has our weights been a topic of teasing. I know it is with a lot of people, but I do think it can be a sensitive topic of teasing for a lot of people, though that may depend on culture.

NAYRT—telling your fat kid to eat a salad might count as teasing but it’s also bullying/abuse.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
wow, the definition of abuse has spread that thin, huh

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Excusemewhat? That's a funny way to spell "good parenting" >.>

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This has gone way too far.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - The last time my father called me fat, I cried for a solid ten minutes, and my mum ripped him a new arsehole.
What I was meant, though, was that "Eat raw vegetables in order to lose weight" really doesn't fit with the Space Viking aesthetic on, like, any level. I admit that Frigga has about 15 minutes total screentime across three movies, so it's hard to make any firm declarations about her character, but it also just feels awkward for her to say that. Like maybe the writers wanted to remind us that Sad!Fat!Thor was sad and fat.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I rolled my eyes at your original "out of character" comment, because how much characterization does this character really have? But now that you've explained it, I have to agree with you. The idea of eating vegetables as a path to health and wellness doesn't seem very Asguardian at all. They seem like a culture that's like: meat, meat, and more meat, then a fuckton of mead and delicious fruit. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Then again, I personally have a problem with Thor getting fat because it implies he was only in the shape he was in because he had the right diet and exercise. Which doesn't seem in keeping with the story at all. I thought it was pretty clear that Thor looked like Thor because he was, well, Thor. No particular diet or exercise regimen required.

So I guess in that sense, Frigga's salad comment was OOC in the same way the fat!Thor's storyline was already OOC.

Not AYRT, by the way. Forgot to say that. :/

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Little nitpicky, but it wasn't said in a teasing matter, IMO. Nor was it said in a cruel, abusive way, the way some people seem to be implying. To me, she was expressing a maternal worry about Thor's drastically altered appearance and the health implications thereof. It was meant to be funny in a "oh look, Frigga's being such a MOM" way, but whether it was actually funny is debatable.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
this seems like a stretch

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Not really.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
You really genuinely think telling a fat person to eat a salad is purely friendly and altruistic?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
When it's said by a parent to their child, absolutely. My grandparents are obese - grandpa got diabetes and grandma's legs gave in. What do you think they keep telling me every day since their health problems began? To eat healthy, so that I won't have to suffer what they are suffering. And it's a damn good advice!

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Your experiences are not universal.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe if Thor was a stranger and it was none of her business.

Newflash, being fat is not healthy and no amount of screaming fatshaming is going to change that.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
Newsflash, health and weight aren't actually direct correlations. Being as beefed up as Thor normally is ALSO is unhealthy for a human, as it requires an unnatural diet and exercise regiment that stresses out the body like whoa.

A healthy human body generally has a degree of fat to it. That's just biology.

nayrt

You know Thor isn’t actually human, right?

The type of beer belly that Thor had in the movie is insanely unhealthy though. Much more than a high protein diet for bulking up muscle.

IMO, it's more complicated than that. You don't say these things to a stranger, no. But parents who are concerned about their kid's welfare and tell them to eat something healthy isn't child abuse. It's not sensitive or tactful, but nothing is said about Thor's weight. It's a reminder - from his mother who loves him, who he loves and trusts and values - to eat healthy, because there's nothing wrong with a healthy diet.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, this is exactly how I interpreted it as well.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
That was my take as well.

It doesn't mean the comment wasn't crappy, but I don't believe Frigga was trying to be cruel to her obviously suffering son. People mean well but sometimes say something incredibly idiotic and/or tone-deaf.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That was how it came across to me as well.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Was it, though? I don't read the comics and Frigga hasn't had that much screen time for me to have a solid grasp of her character. To me the remark was very generic mother stuff. Not particularly sensitive or woke, but coming from a place of concern that her son has experienced rather dramatic weight gain and is suffering from depression. Is Frigga not the kind of mother who wants her kids to be healthy?
