I mean... you're not telling people to stop writing it, you just want it tagged so you can skip these fics, yeah? I don't think that's unreasonable.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people should tag so you can find things easier, of course. That said, I do find your vehemence here a little offputting, and I think I'd feel the same about m/m versus f/m or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You. I like you.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trans and fwiw I agree with you.

and to be honest, suddenly arriving at a sex scene or undressing scene and reading my own body configuration/thoughts of dysphoria described *without any kind of warning* would be distressing for me personally. so I don't think it's particularly thoughtful towards trans readers *either* not to include a content disclaimer. especially when many of us use fanfiction as escapism.

+1

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
fellow trans and this +1000. it's not even a "you're doing it wrong" thing, it's entirely being smacked with my own dysphoria out of nowhere thanks. a little heads-up is all we're asking ok.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes thank you!! I couldn't figure out how to word it when I told a friend that I wasn't OK with random trans head canons showing up in fic without being tagged and they were like 'but YOU'RE trans, isn't that normal for you???'

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. I'm not much of a fan of reading trans versions to my pairings, and when it comes out of nowhere I almost get disappointed because it takes me out of the story.

(I also particularly hate Naoto, but for completely different reasons, I really just can't help myself.)

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this way, too. As long as it's tagged then that's fine, whatever, don't like don't read. But I kinda hate how it always feels predictable who is going to be labeled trans in a series-at least if it's animated, it's going to be the more feminine "twink" guy (Keith from VLD, Lio from Promare) or the tomboyish girl (Pidge from VLD, Naoto from Persona 4 as your image choice shows.)

But I don't think what you enjoy or don't enjoy in fiction has anything to do with your feelings about real people. As long as you aren't giving anyone a hard time for what THEY like, you're good.

It's only because fandom has become so shit lately with insisting what people like in fiction tells you about their moral character that I feel like this kind of thing has even become an issue.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that it should at least be tagged.

Semi-related but god I hate naoto and what a massive mess the discourse surrounding the character is because it ultimately boils down to western values vs eastern values and you’re either a transphobe or a racist depending on which side of the discourse you fall on.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about to make a comment about Naoto but I saw this and changed my mind. Thank you for saving me from myself.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Naoto's the worst.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is my feeling because inevitably it's going to be the tomboy is a trans man and the guy with more domestic and "feminine" interests is going to be a trans woman because, you know, gender essentialism.

SA BECAUSE [UNCLE VOICE] ONE MORE THING

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Like seriously, for an example, instead of Buttercup being the trans boy, make it Bubbles. That would actually be interesting!

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
This is my problem with most trans headcanons. A lot of them read like "character does traditionally [oppposite gender] thing, therefore they MUST be trans!" and it just feels like it pushes gender stereotypes in an uncomfortably ironic way.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-29 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think this is unreasonable either. I don't like to read polyamory fic. I think people should write it as much as they want, and I think people in real life should have polyamorous relationships as much as they want, but I don't particularly want to read it. It's usually obvious just looking at the relationship tags but I'd get pretty bothered if it weren't.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind trans characterization and have read some good ones, but surely people should tag it so readers can choose (and so they can find it easier, too?)

I strongly feel this way, about asexual characterization. Please tag it "asexual jane" or whatever character it is. The last thing I want to be surprised by is "I'm forcing myself to have sex even though I don't like sex." It makes me really, really uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I strongly feel this way, about asexual characterization.

I'm ace and I VERY strongly agree. TBH, my ships are an escape from my own indifference to all that stuff. I may be uninterested in fucking other people, but I'm very much not indifferent to my ship fucking each other. So when I'm reading a shippy fic and all of a sudden it's like, "Surprise! They're asexual!" it's a really unpleasant experience.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. The fandom characterization that all asexuals are also sex-repulsed needs to die. Also, fic like that needs to be tagged dubcon.

I'm with you OP. I'm totes fine with trans fic I just don't want to read it myself, doesn't do anything for me.
I recently came across a fic where Loki turned out to be a hemaphrodite. I guess it makes sense, him being a demi-god and all (and in the mythology he could fall pregnant but then all types of crazy stuff happened in the mythology that they couldn't possibly put in the Marvel films). There was a lot of description of Loki's female genitalia and it noped me out of the fic.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I actually stopped reading any Loki related fic because the whole untagged surprise!intersex Loki was just so damn common.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you there, OP. If it's tagged, great, then I can avoid it. But if not, shame on those writers. :/

(Anonymous) 2019-09-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hard same, OP. Also it would help if people would finally accept the whole trans trend in fic and headcanons as the shiny new fetish that it is instead of trying to disguise it as activism. Would probably cut back on he untagged stuff a it vecause that is done a lot by people trying to teach readers ~a lesson~.

Man, I miss the gender bender days, where you could just change that shit out without needing to add a trans headcanon or any dysphoria...

I think the only time I've actively enjoyed a trans headcanon was when a friend swapped all the genders for the 01 Digimon kids, and was like, "But Mimi is a trans girl, because Mimi is ALWAYS A GIRL or she's just not Mimi."
