I'm big on feminism but I don't think it's misogynistic to ask people to shave before they cosplay. Frankly I don't find leg hair on girls very attractive but I mean I shave like once or twice a month all fall/winter, but if you want to walk around in a skirt with hairy legs, that's your business. However if you're cosplaying as a character, do me a favor and TRY to look like them? You're replicating the costume as exactly as you can, aren't you? Also try to replicate your body.

And argh, back the fuck off. It's not anti-feminist to express a preference for shaved legs. Feminism is about allowing women to have the same choices as everyone else and eliminating gender roles. My choice is to prefer shaved legs. I'm not saying you HAVE to shave your legs, just that I personally as a girl find it more attractive for myself and others.

np <3 your icon is faaaabulous btw. I watched all the seasons of daria/movies this summer and fell in love but there are like NO good daria icons. And also it makes me sad that when I make daria references in my life, no one gets them. That show was awesome. Too bad that they had so much current music on the show the dvd syndication is impossible.

I know I said I'd stop posting but- before I go to bed- here. A GIFT.

I love my icon and god, I wish people got my references. Ah well, nobody knows it exists over here.

Alright, BED. REALLY.

Hahaha, that's where I watched all of it over the summer! I just meant I want to own the DVDs and stuff. Actually my math teacher in HS voiced ummm...Jeffy I think. The blonde one. Might have been james? One of the three J boys who was in love with Quinn.

Why? Seriously, why? Cosplay is for your own personal amusement, not everybody else's. And you do realize that "Also try to replicate your body" isn't exactly the best message?

And argh, back the fuck off. It's not anti-feminist to express a preference for shaved legs. Feminism is about allowing women to have the same choices as everyone else and eliminating gender roles. My choice is to prefer shaved legs.

That's nice. "I will forever think less of you if you don't shave your legs" is not allowing people to have a preference, nor is it "expressing a preference for shaved legs."

Ack, I didn't mean that as "LOSE WEIGHT BITCHEZ!" but as "Change your hair colour/nails/make-up" sort of thing. Like if you're cosplaying as someone with pink hair...wear a wig? IDK. I don't cosplay personally (though I bet it must be fun, I adore halloween) but looking like the character is important to me? Does that make sense? Either way I don't think that came out like I wanted it to.

I'm not saying the OP was right, I'm just saying the responses to the OP are incredibly vicious and maybe the OP deserved it but maybe they were simply talking about cosplay. Honestly at this point I've gotten the actual secret mixed up with all the responses. To make things clear, I think it's ok when girls don't shave because it's their choice, but personally I prefer shaved legs. The OP worded the secret differently, yes, but I think they may have meant something more cosplay related. Once again, I could be wrong.

It makes sense, and I definitely agree that you should attempt to look like the character and that shaving is usually not an unreasonable request. However, I'm looking at the secret in the context of judgemental, uppity cosplayers as well as sexist ideas about how women are supposed to present in public. I feel like cosplayers are denied a lot of right to their person, but that's getting into issues of con harassment and whatnot.

I do think this whole thing got a little out of hand, but to be fair, it never would have gotten so vicious if it weren't for people running in and shouting "CRY MOAR, FEMINAZIS."

Re: 153, 167

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
As a sidenote: I hate the term feminazi, I think it's just so stupid.

As for Cosplay: once again, I don't know much about it, I've never been to a con or cosplayed, I'm just talking about accuracy in imitation. Looking at the secret in that context, I can see how everyone is offended, and it was worded incredibly badly and women who don't shave aren't "not taking care of themself" (unless not shaving equates not washing, which is gross imo, hygiene is important, asking people to wash and wear deoderant isn't too much to ask imo) but if you're dressing up as...IDK...let's say Rikku, shave and wear a blonde/yellow wig or something.

Anyway, there are a lot of hardcore feminists who are taking this too seriously, I don't think it was meant to be the whole YOU AREN'T A WOMAN UNTIL YOU ARE SHAVED and more of a YOU AREN'T CHARACTER "X" UNLESS YOU SHAVE but I may be reading apple and getting orange. Either way people are getting WAY too mad about it. Either way this comment thread is just adding to the madness so I have no room to speak, haha.

Re: 153, 167

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
It is stupid and the people who use it are ignorant. It does make for great Hellsing jokes, though.

Eh. Even that's debateable. If you have a kickass Rikku costume and you've gone and styled your hair then I really don't mind if you're a brunette. I'm not a cosplayer either, but I really don't like the idea that we should hold it against someone if they don't look exactly right or haven't put as much effort into it as they could have. It's just dress-up, it shouldn't be such serious business, and even most half-assed cosplay comes out pretty good in my opinion.

Actually, I think this is par for the course on Fandom Secrets. Has nothing to do with hardcore feminists so much as it does angry fangirls.

Re: 153, 167

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I really like the FEMINAZI icons though. From fandom_wank. They amuse me. It also amuses me that Tamora Pierce uses one of their icons on her LJ. Because she's a famous author (or at least she is to me). And the icons are from fandom_wank.

I guess. I mean you're right, it's not like SERIOUS BUSINESS. But then again, few things are on these here interwebs.

As for that, I've been reading F!S for a while but generally I avoid the comments because of the wank...But I saw the thread on page one and had to keep looking. Like a carcrash. Or trainwreck. And then I had to comment. And here we are now.
