Calm the fuck down, you idiots. If someone is trying to seriously cosplay as a character (and we can assume that this is the case as the OP is in a COSPLAY GROUP) and they are trying to be a character that does not have large quantities of body hair, then they have two options.

a} shave. I realise that not everyone can shave because they have skin disorders / are allergic to creams (even though you don't actually need creams to shave but whatever) / hate it on principle.

b} CHOOSE AN OUTFIT THAT DOES NOT REVEAL THE HAIRIER PARTS OF YOUR ANATOMY. Sure, that can be a little difficult when you've only got one or two costumes to pick from but if you absolutely cannot shave your legs/armpits and you have a choice between something that will make you look closer to the character that you've picked (long trousers, something with sleeves) versus something that will make you look like an AU version of whoever the hell you're going for... well, the answer is obvious.

We've all seen those shitty cosplayers who put on a Naruto headband and say OMG LOOK IM FRUM DAT ANIMAY SHOW ON DAT TV CANNEL LOLOLOL DONT I LOOK EXACTLI LYK HIM?!?! but if you are in a COSPLAY GROUP that, I can only assume, values accuracy, then you should find an alternative or just suck it up and shave.



Oh, by the way, don't tell me that I need to 'learn how to read' and that I'm a misogynistic woman for thinking that you should value accuracy if you belong to a group that considers it to be important. Yes, OP could have phrased her comments better, no, we have not been shaving our legs for the last gazillion years. It was a slip of the keyboard, so to speak, and she probably wasn't thinking about it that way. It is called FANDOM secrets, people, not OMGPEOPLEAREJUDGINGMEBECAUSEOFMYARMPITS secrets.

In fact it takes quite a bit of re-reading the interpret the secret that way as it's very much NOT what it says. It barely mentions the cosplay aspect.

Try rereading the first paragraph and the last line. Now, I know that your thoughts went white hot with rage when you read 'take care of yourself' but this is FANDOM SECRETS. If it was not related to Fandom, it would be in LJSECRETS. Unless 'shaving your legs' = a fandom, uh, one can easily assume that it was put HERE because of the cosplaying aspect.

This is pretty much what I'd thought the OP was intending to get at, even if she didn't phrase it at all the right way. You know, emphasis being on the "if you're cosplaying a character who's exposing a lot of skin - aka faye - shaving would be a good idea" and not the "women who don't shave have clearly let themselves go." (The latter being just a biiiiit misogynistic and the former more along of the lines of standards of accuracy and presentation in cosplay.)

I mean, I've seen Gaara cosplayers who've shaved off their eyebrows for accuracy. I don't see what's so terrible about saying someone cosplay Faye should maybe shave her legs.

The part about "take care of yourself" did throw me a bit, but I think you put it right, people are bawwwing too much about this. I think that what the person was saying about the "take care of yourself" thing is just that when you go cosplaying as some chick who's showing a lot of skin and they look like an ape, it not only gives you the look of not caring how well you do the character but also how you must go about on your non-cosplaying days. What kind of impression are you giving people about what the REAL you must be like?

I'm big on feminism but I don't think it's misogynistic to ask people to shave before they cosplay. Frankly I don't find leg hair on girls very attractive but I mean I shave like once or twice a month all fall/winter, but if you want to walk around in a skirt with hairy legs, that's your business. However if you're cosplaying as a character, do me a favor and TRY to look like them? You're replicating the costume as exactly as you can, aren't you? Also try to replicate your body.

And argh, back the fuck off. It's not anti-feminist to express a preference for shaved legs. Feminism is about allowing women to have the same choices as everyone else and eliminating gender roles. My choice is to prefer shaved legs. I'm not saying you HAVE to shave your legs, just that I personally as a girl find it more attractive for myself and others.

Holy fuck I love you. I read the secret, went 'eh' at the wording of the second to last red caps, but you know, took it with a grain of salt and moved on -- went looking for secrets I thought would have a lot of comments for my fave fandoms. I never thought OP was making a wide statement on women, just releasing something that's been bottling up inside for a while (isn't that the point of this comm???) it seemed pretty cosplay-centric to me. What happened to context?

SERIOUSLY IT BLEW MY MIND HOW MUCH ATTENTION A SECRET THAT WAS DASHED OFF IN 30 SECONDS GOT. :( And I lol how everyone's response is pointing and declaring who's taking it more personally.
