Investing

Anyone know anything about investing in stocks and stuff? I feel like there is SO much to learn, even more to follow, and the business part of it has its own language that you need to learn.

Any tips or resources you would like to share, F!S? Stories/experience?

I just watched The Big Short, which was really interesting. It was very... American though lol

I've been looking into this myself. This is what I'm planning to do:

VIDEOS
Crash Course on Economics (Intro) → Investing and business terms that you need to know in order to learn the language (it really does have its own language) → Investment for beginners videos and the like

This is all VERY, VERY, VERY FUCKING BORING and I really don't think you or anyone else should expect anything else. If you have a good attention span, I'd recommend looking up rec lists for good books to read on the topic. I, personally, can't do it. I have tried and tried, but the reads are always so damn dry that my brain is just like, "wtf are you doing, this isn't comics"

Bah. Good luck. I'm 26 and just starting this journey, and it's going to be pretty stressful. I'm lucky that I have people in my life who have already gotten into it, but don't be afraid to ask around (much like how you've done here)!.

The only investing story I have is after the 2008 crash, my Dad told me to buy a stock, any stock, throw my savings in there and have at, but be patient! So, I liquidated my savings account and bought a bunch of Blizzard stock for $12 a share, because I was a total fangirl (and still am, really), and after ten years I was able to sell it for $75 a share.

On the other end, I took my initial investment from the Blizzard stock and threw it into a gene therapy business where it's now a third of its original value. XD I kinda expected this, because medical research stock is... like... god, you breath and it plummets. I swear, they had a big test, and it showed results! It was positive! But the investors were mad it wasn't Insta Product so the stock halved.

No real tip except talk to your bank (if you like and trust them) and see if they have any advice about investing or savings. Maybe find a financial advisor who'll walk you through some stuff for a one-time fee or something.

It depends on exactly what your goals are for investment:

Retirement: Get a 401K or IRA and be consistent. Do automatic deduction if you can. If you can't make it a monthly payment.

Non-Retirement: Do your homework and diversify. If you can't diversify or do the homework, pick a reasonably good fund and let the manager do it for you. Don't put all your eggs in one basket because things change. If a company sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Get a financial advisor. That's what they're there for. I let mine handle all of the buying and selling for my stocks and I've now got over $50,000 worth of stock from an initial $2,000 investment. Yeah, I pay a fee for it, but it's worth it to not have to worry about it and know that I have someone with years of professional experience handling it all for me.

I work at a bank and honestly, I'd say talk to your bank and get a financial adviser. They're licensed to know this stuff so you don't have to, and most banks should have one who will sit with you and give you options for no fee (what you actually do with them may have an annual fee, but just a sit down appointment should be free). There's way too much out there to navigate on your own unless you have a ton of free time to study it.

I got into 9-1-1 and Buck/Eddie by accident... and then I realized that I've gotten myself into another Trollmurphy/Failchuk show (Glee is why I have trust issues) and now I'm scared for my soul tbh.

(So far I still love everyone. Athena is my queen.)

My two hyper-rare rairpairs: Dr. Frederick Chilton/Will Graham, and Courfeyrac/Cosette.
There are 300 works tagged with the former on AO3 (out of 22k for the whole Hannibal Lector... stuff), but I don't know what percentage of them actually feature a mutually loving relationship, instead of just starting with Chilton/Will and then Hannibal shows up and eats Chilton and sweeps Will off his feet.
There are 17 for the latter, out of 20k Les Mis fics.

Kinda sorta shipping Maggie/OA from FBI, but I'm conflicted about it. It's complicated lol.

Also, it's not new but I still love Buck/Eddie from 911.

And my ongoing embarrassing RPF pairing that I've shipped for over a year and doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon because they keep saying I love you to each other and being adorable as hell.

I'm finally into Instinct now that Elementary is finished and Disco is on hiatus. And while I usually do Alan Cumming, I have to admit that Naveen Andrews is inspiring some serious lust.

Slowly working through Pose because all the feels, and I'm on board with Papi/Angel.

All Rise. I'm getting into Emily Lopez/Luke Watkins and also Emily/Judge Lola Carmichael.

Hellboy, busy shipping villains even though there are basically no fics.

Been really getting into Han/Leia recently. It was never my favorite ship before. It was canon and I accepted that, but I didn't actively ship. But I discovered a bunch of fics of her dominating him, and suddenly I'm in love with this ship. That dynamic with those two just works for me.

Nebula/Natasha. For some reason the idea struck me recently and I've been obsessing over it. Two women with traumatic backgrounds who've both done horrible things in the past because they were brainwashed. I like the idea of them doing some healing together in an AU where Nat isn't dead.
