This is a very cute secret. Nothing bad having a great imagination like that imo! However, I do agree that's a lot of money to spend.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-12 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you, anon! But yeah, I think it's just too much money for me to justify. Especially since I'm cursed to have most perfumes not last more than a couple of hours on my skin. :( Maybe I'll find a similar one that costs less.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
If you collect perfume you might as well go for it! Hopefully the bottle is as pretty as the price!

(Anonymous) 2019-10-12 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm definitely still thinking about it, but I'm leaning towards trying to find a similar one that costs less. However, the prestige of this particular one is part of what makes me associate it with the character I associate it with. So a cheaper one won't really be the same.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-12 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you wear the perfume you collect, out of interest? Curious anon is curious.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-12 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, absolutely! I need to learn to use them more, though. I conditioned myself to use them very sparingly, because when I began collecting I only had a couple, and I never knew if I'd be able to afford to replace one if it ran out.

Now I have quite a few and I should just decant them all into purse spray bottles and use them throughout the day, but I don't. So I'm not really getting maximum pleasure out of them, which is dumb, lol.

I know people say perfumes "go bad" after a few years, but my oldest perfume is like...17 years old and it still smells the same as ever. So in my experience is takes a reeeally long time for them to spoil.

I also give less than zero fucks about whether a perfume is intended for a man or a woman. I mean, the one I have my eye on right now is marketed as a unisex perfume but it's clearly targeted to men (the notes are more traditionally masculine, and the bottle's label is silver-gray). But I'll wear anything that smells good. :)

Please don't *ever* use them 'throughout the day'. Unless you shower a lot or sweat like, a *lot*, once or *maybe* twice is enough. Your nose might become immune to the scent, but it's actually still there, and still going strong, long after you've stopped noticing it.

Those of us who get instant, sick, ice-pick headaches from perfumes thank you.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes by "throughout the day" I did in fact mean, occasionally, once the scent is no longer detectable to anyone whose nose is not pressed against my skin.

And no, in many cases the fragrance is not still there, unless you are a bloodhound. Some people's skin just doesn't hang onto fragrance very well. Humidity also affects the longevity and sillage of scents. From time to time I ask my friends and family how strong my perfume is. Often their answer is, "I can't smell it at all."

I have literally had to get up and walk out of rooms because of people and their perfumes. Either they are bathing in it, or i'm really sensitive.

My sister and i almost never wore/wear perfume, because we would put it on and in about fifteen minutes, the whole scent would change, usually to something very unpleasant. We both loved that 'Love's Baby Soft' that was so popular in the early eighties, but it smelled like ass on both of us.

The only scent we can both wear that still smells good later is White Shoulders.

My mom had that problem with Chanel No.5!

Smelled nice on other people, and in the bottle, but like literal cat piss on her.

Some perfumes just react weirdly on the skin of some people.

Scent is the first thing you'll get used to. Friends and family will often get used to the smell of your fragrance just like you do if they're exposed to it for long periods, or frequently.

I don't notice my sister's perfume any more, unless she's recently switched it up, and my friend always wears the same scent, which I'm now immune to unless she's literally just applied it.

For all you know, you smell like you ram-raided a perfumery to strangers.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-13 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to rotate my perfumes, so it'd be hard for my friends and family to get very used to them. Also, I wear them to work and if I'm ever concerned I put on too much I'll ask whoever I'm sitting beside (which is a new person every day), but I've never had anyone say it was more than mildly noticeable.

I will acknowledge that if I forget to put my perfume on until right before I leave the house (which happens occasionally) then it could definitely be very noticeable - too noticeable - for the first hour or so. But I try not to do that because I know some people have uncommonly strong senses of smell.

Did you check ebay for sample sizes or rollerballs? Those might tide you over for a bit.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-12 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, as a Canadian, ebay is often not a very good deal. Once I adjust for exchange rate and add shipping (shipping is rarely free for Canadians), stuff usually ends up being more expensive than it's worth.

Also, I only buy things I know I like in smaller units if they cost almost the same per ml as a full sized one would cost. Otherwise I'd rather just spend the money up front and get the bigger size.

I have tried looking for full sized bottles of this fragrance on ebay, but the cheapest I can find it is slightly more expensive than the price I'll pay if I wait until the next Sephora sale. And If I buy from sephora I get the points, and I know for sure it's legit.

Thank you anyway for the suggestion, though. :)

I can kinda relate to this. Twenty years ago when I was reading the Stephanie Plum books I dreamed of being able to afford Bulgari so I could know what Ranger smelt like. There was a brief period between my career taking off and before I got married where I actually could have spent the money but I never did.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I usually look at BPAL to figure out my favorite characters' signature scents (which is at least a bit more affordable when I decide I gotta have it for myself!)-- but every once in a while I wind up with a scent headcanon that's out of my price range (or incompatible with my allergies, or there's a character who I think has a rotating selection of several...), so I know your pain.

But also, I'm just thrilled to see a secret about fragrance headcanons because it's one of those things I consider important that I don't often see people dig into! But if I'm going to write shippy fic, like... I gotta know what the characters smell like, so I can hit more senses when describing a hug or clothing theft...

(Anonymous) 2019-10-13 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I love this comment, anon! It's nice to know other people think about this kind of thing, too.

TBH, I don't really get to have associated perfumes for most of my faves, because I tend to feel that most of my faves aren't people who wear perfume. So I just have to content myself with imagining what smells they pick up from their daily activities. But when I do find a character who I think would wear a perfume, I'm always happy to choose one for them. :)

I gotta know what the characters smell like, so I can hit more senses when describing a hug or clothing theft...

I like the way you think, anon. :)

I can totally understand this. I have some scent headcanons, though mostly for original characters. It's usually scents that don't actually get sold where I live so I can rarely test them out though. It's often more the type of "nature and environment" scents (like Demeter's Thunderstorm etc.). To test those, I first had to order several samples from surrendertochance because they don't sell those perfumes in my country.
However for me, the most important thing is that I don't get an instant migraine from a scent. Which happens more often than not. So I very sadly had to let go of the thought of owning a lot of otherwise perfect perfumes, but spending money on scents I can't possibly wear makes no sense. Saves money but makes me sad.
