Inversely, I think anyone can draw any non-human character as any race/colour they want.

Technically yes, artistically you'd have to draw Nala with a similar skin pallet to her lion counterpart in order to properly identify her as that character.
This isn't so much a play on race, as it is using what traits you have available to create a likeness recognizable despite being a different species.
