Considering what a mess we've made of Earth, I think the opposite.

DA, hard same.
I think humanity has a moral duty to clean up the mess it made on Earth.

I think we also have that duty, sure.

I would find that a more compelling argument if there was some other intelligent species out there with a better track record. But as far as we know, we're it. There's a reasonably high probability that, if intelligent life is going to exist in the universe, it's either going to be us here on earth, or it's going to have to get kick-started by us. And I'd rather not rely on us sticking it out over the very long term, given the very mess that we've made.

And at the end of the day, I think the existence of intelligent life is a good thing.

There are. They're here on earth with us. We're driving them to extinction.

Nothing in this opinion in any way conflicts with trying to be environmentalist and reduce mass extinction on earth

Agreed. We're terrible. Let's not inflict humanity on the universe.

I think we're better than nothing. I don't think human extinction would be a good thing.

But also, I don't think that this necessarily has to entail human colonization of space, I also include things like directed panspermia (if technologically feasible). Seeding relatively simply life on other planets, that kinda thing.

On Earth, certainly. I don't want us to go extinct. But I don't think we should spread out to other planets. I think they are just fine the way they are.

"Herpes" implies that there's other ecosystems or life forms out there to be infected or harmed by our presences

Surely you can't have humans spreading throughout the cosmos without ecosystems (which must include other lifeforms) to sustain them, so...

There's a bunch of different things here. First, I don't think it's *impossible* for humans to sustain themselves throughout the cosmos without taking advantage of pre-existing ecosystems, but that's not really germane to my point in this context.

Part of what I'm saying is that we should try to create ecosystems and seed life in areas where there is currently none, but where the conditions might be ripe for life. Another, separate part is that we might consider altering extremely simple existing ecosystems, and another step up from that would be actually colonizing well-developed ecosystems, which I'm not necessarily advocating - I think you could make a case that it might be preferable if it was the only alternative to extinction, but I recognize that there would be costs and tradeoffs in such a scenario.

I find it extremely egotistical to believe that we're so valuable to the universe that it needs us in it somewhere.

I don't believe there's such a concept as "valuable to the universe" in the first place.
