Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

Humanity has a moral obligation to seed the cosmos with life if we're able to

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering what a mess we've made of Earth, I think the opposite.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
DA, hard same.
I think humanity has a moral duty to clean up the mess it made on Earth.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we also have that duty, sure.

I would find that a more compelling argument if there was some other intelligent species out there with a better track record. But as far as we know, we're it. There's a reasonably high probability that, if intelligent life is going to exist in the universe, it's either going to be us here on earth, or it's going to have to get kick-started by us. And I'd rather not rely on us sticking it out over the very long term, given the very mess that we've made.

And at the end of the day, I think the existence of intelligent life is a good thing.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

There are. They're here on earth with us. We're driving them to extinction.

Nothing in this opinion in any way conflicts with trying to be environmentalist and reduce mass extinction on earth

Agreed. We're terrible. Let's not inflict humanity on the universe.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we're better than nothing. I don't think human extinction would be a good thing.

But also, I don't think that this necessarily has to entail human colonization of space, I also include things like directed panspermia (if technologically feasible). Seeding relatively simply life on other planets, that kinda thing.

On Earth, certainly. I don't want us to go extinct. But I don't think we should spread out to other planets. I think they are just fine the way they are.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thiiiiiiiiiis. Right now, we'd be the herpes of the cosmos.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Herpes" implies that there's other ecosystems or life forms out there to be infected or harmed by our presences

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely you can't have humans spreading throughout the cosmos without ecosystems (which must include other lifeforms) to sustain them, so...

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a bunch of different things here. First, I don't think it's *impossible* for humans to sustain themselves throughout the cosmos without taking advantage of pre-existing ecosystems, but that's not really germane to my point in this context.

Part of what I'm saying is that we should try to create ecosystems and seed life in areas where there is currently none, but where the conditions might be ripe for life. Another, separate part is that we might consider altering extremely simple existing ecosystems, and another step up from that would be actually colonizing well-developed ecosystems, which I'm not necessarily advocating - I think you could make a case that it might be preferable if it was the only alternative to extinction, but I recognize that there would be costs and tradeoffs in such a scenario.

HARD SAME

I find it extremely egotistical to believe that we're so valuable to the universe that it needs us in it somewhere.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't believe there's such a concept as "valuable to the universe" in the first place.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Earth is already overpopulated and strained for resources. This seems like a criminally irresponsible idea.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-19 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s a myth. Resource distribution is just corrupted.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-20 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
For whatever reason, there are too many people not receiving necessary resources. Putting more effort into increasing demands on a broken system that's unable to sustain the current demand is extremely foolish.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
what is the connection between these ideas

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Demand outstrips supply. Increasing the population would be increasing the demand that's already not being met. This is not rocket science.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-20 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not advocating for increasing the population of earth, nor am I advocating for exploiting other planets or stellar systems for resources to support earth's population.

I don't think interstellar trade is even *possible*, whether or not it's good.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-20 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Why? Please provide an argument for this.

I'm not one of those saying we're terrible and should go extinct, I just think there's no proof that life is necessary in the cosmos or that humanity has any specific relevance in the universe.

Re: What's a weird belief of yours?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-20 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that life is not necessary in the cosmos and that humanity has no specific relevance in the universe. I think that necessity, relevance, and meaning are ultimately constructs of intelligent, sentient minds. A universe devoid of intelligent life would be utterly cold and empty. And as far as we know, human beings are the only intelligent life in the universe, and the only intelligent life we can count on existing.
