How would you feel about Terry Pratchett if the only Pratchett you'd ever read was Colour of Magic?

Comment but not secret OP, here—I know better than to recommend someone start Discworld with Colour of Magic, heh.

The only Pratchett books my friend has read or tried to read are Wyrd Sisters (we’re both Shakespeare/theatre nerds) Lords and Ladies, and Good Omens, which she finally listened to on audiobook after seeing the Amazon series, and I’m fairly sure it’s the only one she actually finished. I wouldn’t be surprised if reviews comparing Kill the Farm Boy to Pratchett were thinking of early Pratchett when they made the comparison, though.

My point is also that the first book in the series might not actually be representative of the whole series, the same way that Colour of Magic isn't really representative of Discworld!

AYRT—point, except my friend is now halfway through Kill the Farm Boy and loving it, so maybe not. I get the feeling that there’s as much gross out humor in the second book as the first, anyway. I always thought my tolerance for poop jokes was pretty high, but somehow the writing really put me off. It does remind me of very early Pratchett in that most characters feel like walking punchlines first, people second.

Could it be real early, non-Discworld Pratchett books? like the Bromeliad trilogy and the Carpet People those reviews thought of?

As someone who's finally getting into discworld, I started with Wyrd Sisters and wasn't all that impressed. But I can also see someone just sincerely enjoying "irreverent fantasy" as a broad category, whether it's poop jokes or brilliant pun-laden satire, just like someone who likes horror as a broad category might really enjoy schlock and gore and camp AND really immaculate, cerebral horror that's commenting on social ills. It's fine if you only like one of those things! But it doesn't mean that someone else's appreciation for both of them is insincere or misinformed. Just that different things about the works are appealing to you guys, and you haven't been able to articulate them specifically enough to know that yet.
