I... dunno why this is something you "just had to come out and say it" about.

There will always be some creepy people in every fandom with every kink that can't - or don't - do fiction =/= reality. Was this not a given?

Where are you finding people that disagree with this?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
but most kinks aren't intrinsically and fundamentally morally horrific in reality so it's not really a great comparison

Same. If I found out someone I knew wrote/read that child porn stuff, I would cut them out of my life.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think all of them do.

But many, yes.

Your attitude is why most of us keep it locked down and between friends.

You're welcome.

Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-01 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
well, it's not really OP's attitude. The attitude of most people in society.

Not OP, but it is customary to back up one's argument with examples. I think that's what OP was doing here.

Yeah, that was really fucked up.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-01 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think you're right about this. :/

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's not...politically correct (I know that's not the right term, but it's the closest one I can think of right now) fandom-wise, but I agree with you.

Personally, my moral standards are the same for fiction as they are for reality. If something's wrong in real life, I don't want to read about it being glorified or romanticized or treated as if it's totally fine and acceptable. The whole "it's okay because it's fiction!!!" argument has never worked for me. Honestly, I find it kind of weird that I never seem to come across anyone else who feels this way.

i mean... yeah? what a milquetoast statement, "some of them". you can point at any group of people and go "some of them are probably fucked up" and 1) be right 2) be able to go "well i didn't say everyone!" when someone disagrees with you

I guess it kind of depends what you mean.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
If you mean there are likely a few people out there who think it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, yes, probably so. If you mean there are possibly a few people who are so out of touch with reality that they think all the laws, the societal disgust and abhorrence, and the evidence (of trauma in childhood abuse survivors) are all wrong, well, I guess that could be true, given that people like anti-vaxxers, flat-Earthers, and supremacists exist.

However, I think some people write it because they are working something out. And I think some people write it because it is taboo. I think that most people who write about gruesome murders or horrible torture or awful abuse, don't really want to have anything to do with any of them in real life, even if they write from the perspective of a character who enjoys them. Part of the reason people can read and write terrible things is because it is fictional.

Now, of course, there are people who have issues with the division of fiction and reality. And there are people out there who either sociopathic or sadistic or both. But determining that, judging a writer's motivation, just from a piece of fiction seems like something you could get really, really wrong. If they outright state something about it in their author's notes, then that seem fair to judge.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, if writing underage/adult sex fics scratches an itch enough to stop someone from actually harming children, then I'm all for it.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Mm, like... I get you, sure. Like, I don't think everyone in those tags is into what they're writing, even the things that do focus on sex, but there's a big difference to me between like... a ship fic that just happens to be to either side of the minor/adult divide, without a large gap or power differential and with a focus on the relationship/feelings, a fic about a character recovering from abuse, and a fic that just seems to be porn about kids. And while I understand writing the first two, and while I am comfortable with the idea that an adult would draw on their own youthful experience to write about the thoughts and feelings around a young character's sexuality, if I was to run across the third category thinking I was there for something else, I'd hit the back button and then I'd have a very hard time not thinking that the writer was into that.
