Distinctive voices

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What actors or actresses' voices can you immediately recognize, no matter what cartoon cover they're in?

Which ones are you surprised by every time?

The guy who dubs Dr Greene's voice in the French version of ER and also does Rizel in LastMan--the latter was so unsettling to hear because of the former.

Keith David's voice is so recognizable.

Dan Green and (unfortunately) Vic Mignogna.

Jonny Yong Bosch

he does seem to genuinely enjoy voice acting and more power to him but dear god he's distinctive. and they cast him for that, they always give him the same character more or less.

Dante Basco is very distinct. Sort of raspy?

Yuri Lowenthal, Greg Ayres, Monica Rial, Mona Marshall, Vic Mignona (yeah, I hate it too).

Scott McNeil, Yuri Lowenthall, Nathan Lane, Johnny Yong Bosch, Sam Riegel, Matt Mercer, and Liam O'Brien, are always recognizable to be. And unfortunately Michelle Ruff since she always manages to make every character she voices sound incredibly bitchy no matter who they are. (currently playing Persona 3 again if you couldn't tell)

I'm very familiar with a lot of voice actors since I wanted to be one once upon a time, so I'm not surprised very often.

Brian Doyle-Murphy (the Flying Dutchman on Spongebob, K'nuckles on Flapjack). It's a very raspy old man voice I always recognize when I hear him.

I can usually clock Wallace Shawn's voice too thanks to watching Toy Story and The Princess Bride all the time growing up.

I was today years old when I found out Ferris Beuller is Simba. I grew up with both those films. What a weird blind spot to have.

I recognise a lot of game VAs, though, especially ones that worked on Dragon Age Origins since I've played it so many times. I also have a game of trying to spot a wild Stephen Russel (who voiced the original Garrett in Thief: The Dark Project and had numerous roles in Skyrim). That man has an amazing range.

Inspired by 4: Voice acting and race

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Setting aside Lion King for the moment, do you think that animated films set in specific countries/cultures should cast voice actors of that country/culture? For example, should Mulan have had more Chinese actors? How about Kung Fu Panda?

Re: Inspired by 4: Voice acting and race

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. Don't really care. I care more about being a good voice actor. The Lion King suffered from this because they didn't focus on getting good voice actors. Beyonce wasn't great and Chiwetel Ejiofor sounded awful. He was by far the worst.

Eh. I think it's probably better on the whole but I don't think it's really a big deal.

Re: Inspired by 4: Voice acting and race

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. It's so jarring to hear an American or British accent from a character who is supposed to be from a different culture.

I have no idea what I was watching the other day but it was some film about white people being awful and there was this one guy playing a poor farmer on an island and I'm pretty sure he was from Croydon? Lol.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Mulan, yes, definitely. If they're grounding a film in a specific country or culture, using that culture's history or mythology, they should make the effort to cast voice actors with the relevant background.

I haven't watched Kung Fu Panda, so I have no particular opinion, though it certainly couldn't have hurt.

It bothers me because yep, it's not just enough for representation to be on the screen, behind the camera works as well, but not enough for me to boycott anything over it.

Re: Inspired by 4: Voice acting and race

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say that it matters... if not for the bit where non-white VAs get much fewer roles than white VAs, we live in a culture where racism is sort of ingrained, raceblind casting is a fantasy, etc, etc.
So yes - casting directors should make a particular effort to cast non-white VAs for non-white roles. Hell, for white roles, too - flip that script, why not.

(And I have to be honest - 90% of the time when they cast some white celebrity with no voice acting experience because ✧・゚:* Star Power *:・゚✧, I don't actually know the celebrity. So for me, they just cast someone without any relevant experience for 0 reason.)

IDGAF, but that might be because I grew up in a country where every piece of foreign media (both animated and live action) gets dubbed into our language by local voice actors, so we learn to "ignore" the circumstances/background of the actual voice and focus on the character.

Of course this also causes weird situations like the same actor having different voices in different movies (depending on which studio dubbed them) or the fact that Will Smith, Nathan Fillion, and Benedict Cumberbatch (among others) usually share the same voice.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-10 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really get this since you can be of, and from a certain culture and not have any particular accent. It reminds me of the first CA movie where Jim Morita surprises them by having an american accent, it doesn't make him or his actor suddenly white just because he's 'talks like a white person'. I don't think they should hire anyone to fake any particular accent, especially when it's not done with respect, but I don't think anyone should be excluded from any role for sounding (or looking really) a certain way.

The movie has been out for one year now and the DVD's been available for so many months, you can stop crying about "spoilers!1! not everyoen has seen it yet!" in a discussion about its sequel.

It’s 77 degrees in fucking November and it hasn’t rained once. How many climate change deniers would I have to sacrifice to rain gods by leaving them tied up in the desert without water to get some rain? I have bulbs to plant and the ground is set like cement.
