Best Thanksgiving Recipes

(Anonymous) 2019-11-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Any tried and true ones you trot out every year? Any you excited to try this year?

Re: Best Thanksgiving Recipes

(Anonymous) 2019-11-13 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
We don't do T-giving at my place, but when I've been at my girlfriend's, they have the best sweet potato thing that she gave me the recipe for, so periodically I just make it for myself, lol.

I love butternut squash soup, my aunt has a wonderful spicy recipe that I adore. I don't quite know what it is, but the closest I can find is this:
https://minimalistbaker.com/curried-butternut-squash-soup/

I also love brusslesprouts, (crisping up the leaves is delicious) frying them halved in a pan with garlic, paprika, and S&P is so good. Spinach is great cooked the same way with a touch of lemon juice!

Other than that I save the seeds from my carving pumpkins, and dry them out in the oven with different spices,

I haven't actually watched the trailer, but I've seen some screenshots and some gifs, and I am so impressed by the artists responsible - they must have worked so damn hard to turn the earlier nightmare into what they have now, it looks so much better.

I watched the original trailer that people bitched about and I don't know if I just don't care about Sonic enough or what, but I can't tell what they changed...

honestly i dread to think how horribly overworked these artists were just to fix some shoddy animation for a movie that's probably going to be shit.

??

So like how long ago did the original trailer come out? Those are completely different designs in a way that makes me think this wasn't in some way planned? (/conspiracy)

Captain America's List

(Anonymous) 2019-11-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
If you wanted to help someone who'd missed the entirety of the last 75 years catch up on news and culture and so forth, what would you suggest they check out? What movies, books, music, TV, or historical events would you prioritise?

Re: Captain America's List

(Anonymous) 2019-11-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
SA: Also, when it comes to media, do you prioritise 'artistic value' (groundbreaking cinema, cult classics, works that kicked off artistic movements) or 'cultural weight' - things that got seen by a huge number of people?

Re: Captain America's List

(Anonymous) 2019-11-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I would try to emphasize... like... impact, I guess? How big of a role each thing played in changing the culture or the country or the world, basically. Give context for why things matter and then go back through stuff in more detail.

The Thing because best horror movie with a simple story line.

The Godfather 1&2.

The Lion King, Wall-E, and Beauty and the Beast.

I'd have him play tetris, Super Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Bioshock, and The Last of Us (in that order). Or maybe just all the Zelda games in order.

Wow, it look me longer than it should have to figure out why you called this "Captain America's List"...

I have no idea honestly. Maybe show them a compilation of George Crabtree's 'wild ideas' and show them how they all exist today. (I guess even that would be dated to them though since MM's from around 1900)
I'd prioritize functionality over history, since they need to be able to live in the here and now first before they can catch up to the past.

Well, if they didn't get a chance to see Wizard of Oz (1939), that's probably the most referenced American work after the Bible.

Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Dick Dale, and Link Wray set the stage for music with distortion.

The Beatles are probably as big as Wizard of Oz in terms of cultural references.

After that, just cherry-picking musical movements:

Herbie Hancock's "Rockit"

The Ramones and The Clash

Wendy Carlos, Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Daft Punk

Black Sabbath

The Beach Boys

Parliament Funkadelic (in its various incarnations)

I have a weird schedule this week: I worked the last 4 days, I was off today, I work tomorrow and Thursday, off Friday, work Saturday and off Sunday, so I got a lot of stuff done today so I can (hopefully) have Friday as a lazy, do-nothing day. Just a bunch of random errands plus a mani-pedi appointment.

Last thing I did before bed was make a mashup of Katy Perry's Circle the Drain and Katy Perry's Peacock.

Funnily enough, I always end up making the SAME mashup of Circle the Drain and Peacock every couple of years. It's basically a ritual on every PC i have at this point - like friggin' clockwork, I swear to god.

Almost had a panic attack at work because I didn't know how to do something important and the person who knows how to do it (who is cross training me) is gone for a work conference.

Mondegreens you like better than the actual words.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-13 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
mondegreen [mon-di-green] noun - a word or phrase resulting from a mishearing of another word or phrase, especially in a song or poem.

Brought to you by the 'staccato' roller coaster from Katy Perry's Hot N Cold.
