"She can afford to eat, I don't get why she won't."

Some people are just skinny however much they eat, just like some people are fat however much they don't. Unrealistic standards of beauty are a bad thing, but it's holding everyone to the same standard in itself that's damaging, not which specific standard you're using – picking a different standard won't solve anything.

"Some people are just skinny however much they eat"

THANK YOU.

I'm 16 years old and 95 pounds. I haven't been able to reach the 100 lb mark- the closest I've come is 98. I eat normally, and hell yes I enjoy my sweets, but- I just don't gain weight.

Re: 117

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Personally, I'm fat, and I've never been able to lose weight, but several of my oldest and closest friends are on the skinny end of the spectrum and I know perfectly well that it's not as easy for them as just HAVIN SOMETHING TO EAT LOL. As a fat person, fat hate and the idea that we should all be skinny upsets me a lot, but it upsets me just as much that people seem to think that the best way to respond to it is to hate on skinny people's bodies instead. Yes, it's upsetting to see someone purposefully starve themselves into a thinness that's unhealthy for them, but some people are just built that way and you can't change your body type.

And yeah, some people don't find skinny attractive, but guess what? It's their body, and they don't have any responsibility to match up to what anyone else thinks is attractive.

THIS. ♥

Any time, "[X body type] is unattractive," is voiced, this should be the response.

I agree very, very, very much but I think what the OP is referring to is the fact that Marcia said she needed to starve herself to be skinny enough for her clothes on DH. Personally I don't find that insulting but I get that other people would. I don't think every woman should look like Catherine Tate but I do agree that women like her should be more represented in media.

Re: 117

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree absolutely that average women and fat women are horribly under- and misrepresented in the media, and I think it's horrible that anyone should be expected to starve themselves. But I can already see people saying that skinny isn't what women should look like and that "real women" should look like Catherine Tate, and it's upsetting to see people just turning the usual fat hate around to hate on a different body type. All bodies deserve to be appreciated the way they are.

Re: 117

[identity profile] mareeana.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, there's the real woman issue. I used that expression yesterday commenting on a secret someone made about being scared of Catherine's boobs. Just to clarify my position (although I'm not sure it means too much to you ;p), I said it was a cliché and I think it is. And I don't think real women have to be curvy, it's just that curvy women are attractive too. Or, in other words, Catherine Tate is a real woman, not the real woman and yes, real woman is a cliché, I was just using it for the lulz really so I very much agree with your use of quotes there.

Re: 117

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly! She is a real woman. So am I. So are my hella skinny lady friends. So are my fat lady friends. How much other people consider us attractive is none of our concern, and people need to stop talking about what they consider attractive as though it's somehow relevant in determining what other people should do with or feel about their bodies.

\o/ YAY FOR EVERYONE

OP

(Anonymous) 2008-10-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Marcia Cross has admitted to starving herself.

I wouldn't be disgusted if she was skinny just because she was skinny, but the fact that she admitted to starving herself to be thin enough pissed me off.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard as much, but I still think it's still hateful to talk about any body type like that, especially in a society where people are encouraged daily to be sensitive about the way they look. It's her physical features you described as 'disgusting' rather than the act of starvation – never mind the fact that people who starve themselves, like people with any illness, deserve sympathy, not anger. I'm angry that we live in a society where it's acceptable to starve yourself, but the people who're starving themselves as a result of that are just as much victims as the people who're told that they're lazy and greedy because they're not starving themselves.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-28 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, in a way, but I honestly think MC should know better. She has a Masters in Psychology and she knows she has tons of young girls who look up to her. I don't think she's a victim. She has the power to stand up and say, no. This is who I am and I'm not going to change because you think I'm not skinny enough. Especially if she is in the spotlight, she should set a good example. And even then, I think it was really stupid to say that she starves herself because I bet some of her fans took after her.

But I do agree I was a bit harsh, but still, I was trying to make a point.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-28 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Even the very sensible can be strongly affected by the message that a woman needs be skinny that permeates modern society – and that doesn't change the objective hate for her body that the secret was full of. Plenty of people have skinny bodies naturally – are they disgusting too? The secret strongly implies that you think they are, because you just say outright that her features themselves are disgusting. I can see what you were trying to say but I don't think that secret makes the right point at all.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-29 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
To me, being that skinny is disgusting, but I also think being extremely overweight is disgusting as well. It looks disgusting to me. I'm pissed off at her for choosing to be that way.

I'm just pissed that people call CT fat when she isn't. I already said I was harsh in the sectret about MC, I'm not going to deny that. And it's not right of me to be mean, but that's how I felt when I made the secret. I felt I had to make a point because so many actresses aren't thin enough these days and they get harsher comments when they are over a size 4 and it's disgusting. I wanted to reverse it, but I do apologize for offending anyone.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Other people's bodies are none of your business. How people choose to look is none of your business. Your anger over it is irrelevant.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-29 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, sorry for having an opinion. It's my secret and if you don't agree than okay, fine. I didn't make it so others could agree with me or not, I made it because I wanted to express how I felt. Get over it, damn.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'll get over it when people thinking they have some kind of god-given right to other people's bodies ceases to be such a widespread, damaging problem.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-29 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
wtf, get over it. people have right to their opinion.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm more concerned with other people's right not to be hurt, objectified and belittled. I wish people would stop acting like their right to have an opinion somehow excuses them from any responsibility to be in the slightest bit considerate to other people.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-29 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
well, i never said i wasn't mean in the secret. i admit that the secret was harsh. but it was my opinion directed at how mc looks because of what she does to herself and how i felt about it. it was directed at her in the mindset that she does not have an eating disorder. and again, i admit being mean about it and not realizing that it would hurt other people who are naturally skinny and for that i'm sorry. and i'm not saying i'm any better than people who make fun of fat people. i prefer full figured women to boney women, that's just me. i wasn't shoving my opinion down people's throats and telling them that i'm right. it was just a secret to express how i feel.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I do understand where you're coming from in that it's atrocious the extent to which women get judged and put down for being not skinny, but hate of any kind, even if it's against something that doesn't usually get as much hate as the other end of the spectrum, never solves anything, just upsets more people.

Thank you for apologising, and I'm glad you do realise it was mean; I just wish more people would think about these things before they voice them in a public space where they're going to hurt people and state their personal preferences as though they're somehow objective or universal >__<

And ... well ... seriously? If she's starving herself, then it's an eating disorder :C

Having a masters in psychology means nothing. Absolutely nothing. Rants about the values of formalized education aside, knowing that what you are doing is irrational does not prevent you from acting irrationally. Whether or not you think she's a victim doesn't change the fact of the matter, in my opinion.

Thank you for saying this. I've struggled with being thin my whole life, and at best, I've weighed about 98 lbs. I'm normally around 90 or 89.

But it's not because I starve myself; it's just the way my body is, and there's little that I can do to change that. I also have digestive problems that hinder my weight gain. It's seriously hurtful to have people accuse me of looking 'disgusting' or not being a 'real woman' just because of my body type.

Re: 117

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Augh, yes. I hate it when people who're used to fat hate think that means they have the right to rag on thin people as if they're not just doing exactly the same thing and perpetrating exactly the same problem. People seem to think people who are thin are somehow immune or something and ... ugh. I wish people would just accept that everyone's body is different, not all humans can look the same, and everyone should be appreciated in their own right, individually, not in comparison to each other or to supermodels or to the physically impossible airbrushed ideals on magazine covers.
