I don't understand this secret

Most people don't fit neatly into a Hogwarts house. Hell, even the characters in Harry Potter didn't. Harry was definitely part Slytherin and Hermione would have done great in Ravenclaw.

To shoehorn people in to a Hogwarts house, usually part of their character development is ignored, to make them fit better. For instance, Captain America is brave and courageous, so that would make him an obvious candidate for Gryffindor. But he's also a leader, resourceful, intelligent and values justice, which come from the other three houses.

By simply labelling him a Gryffindor, it shows that the writer is focusing more on his brave and courageous traits, and probably going to focus on him being the all around good guy. Depending on the houses of the other characters, it'd give a good insight into the opinions of the writer, and what character traits they were likely to ignore to make them fit the mould better, and probably indicate whether you were likely to enjoy their work.

Sorting completely unrelated media characters into Hogwarts houses (which are themselves irritatingly stereotyped)creates OOC portrayals. Seems fairly obvious to me, although OP's use of "aesthetic" is admittedly potentially misleading.

Yeah, the aesthetic bit is what I didn't get at all.

what about when people do this with real people instead of fictional characters?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. Bloody annoying.

Huh?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying that they sort them according to house colors?

Or do you mean you judge them for the way they sort them, thinking they'll only focus on the house traits? I mean, given how the canon Harry Potter characters were sorted, the stated house traits seemed pretty meaningless when the character being sorted was stubborn about which house they should be in. Most characters I can think of have traits that fit into more than one house, but I would think that in this case both mind-set and reinforcement would matter.

I couldn't even answer the first question because I don't care about sports.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean the one that says assume you don’t care about the sport? Why does it not surprise me that you still couldn’t answer it.

since I don't care about sports in general, not just one sport, I couldn't answer it. The only way I could have answered it is if an option had been root for the team your friend is on. Which wasn't there.

OP what does this secret even mean lol

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's not hard as long as you understand that OP has misused the word "aesthetic" whilst trying to avoid saying "stereotype" probably because they think the former sounds more neutral.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Their use of the word aesthetic really does get badly in the way of understanding what they meant, though. I mean, the houses do very much have their own aesthetic, and most characters do as well, to some degree, so a lot of us are probably sitting here trying to figure out why OP cares so much about a character's personal style and what colors they wear and such.

A single misused word can usually be intuitively factored out, but in this case it's not immediately clear the word was misused.

Wow, sorry your secret is getting people all pedantic, as if "aesthetic" has only ever been used for physical appearance vs as a shorthand for creating a certain mood/theme/focus that the artist/writer finds beautiful or appealing... like, c'mon y'all. This wasn't complicated.

Aesthetic has a meaning, and it doesn't mean what they used it to mean. Face it, they used the word wrong. No one here was busting their chops about it. We were all expressing legitimate confusion because we legitimately didn't know what they were trying to say. That happens sometimes when you use the wrong word. Live with it.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you are just too old, but the younger generation uses aesthetic as a mood board and to categorize things that suit their personality as "their aesthetic".

I like pictures of rain and space... that is my aesthetic.

[personal profile] osidiano 2019-11-30 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
They did use the word aesthetic correctly. It means being concerned with a look or feel, usually something the artist finds interesting, appealing, compelling, or beautiful. Like... what do you think this word means?? Are you confusing it with "ascetic"???

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeaahhh. I knew exactly what OP meant by that. That is exactly what aesthetic means too.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
True that. Though to be fair at least fan writers give more complexity to Slytherin than J.K Rowling ever did.
