Seasonal treats!

(Anonymous) 2019-11-29 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Seasonal treats, this being American Thanksgiving and all, are great, so tell us, FS, about your favorites and why you love them!

I love the pumpkin scones from Starbucks, and I get a pumpkin spice latte every two or three years and then I'm good for another year or three, lol. I like turkey sandwiches that include dressing and cranberry sauce. At Christmas there's these coconut cream-filled dark chocolate Santas that I love, I buy a lot after Christmas when they're 75% off and then ration them out over the next month. I like going to the Italian grocery store and boggling at all their amazing Christmas goodies, I usually get a small panettone.

But then yesterday it was cold and rainy like its supposed to be at the end of November where I live (Northern California), and as I was out walking I could smell the woodmoke from someone's fire place, and was disturbed by how apprehensive I was suddenly feeling, and then there was the realization that I now associate the once-loved scent of wood smoke with the devastating, lethal fires that have plagued my entire state for the past few years. Bittersweet indeed.

PSLs are great. I also really like Chestnut Praline Lattes, once Starbucks runs out of PSL syrup. A couple of times each winter I have a peppermint mocha with whip in a cup on the side so I can eat it like mousse in between sips.

I love my great grandmother's butter tarts (butter tarts MUST have vinegar in them or they're too sweet and flat tasting).

Gingersnaps can be really good, as long as they're moist not dry.

Chocolate oranges. I love those things so much. I also like candied pecans. They are addictive.

Oh god, my Wal-Mart had a skid of the chocolate oranges on clearance after Christmas for 1.25 and it was so hard not to just be like, "Please just put the skid in my car, thanks."

I bought 20 once to eat through out the year.

Last year I saw them in the store and thought "Oh, I will come back and get one" and then they were sold out! This year I bought one as soon as I saw them!

Seconding the love of pumpkin scones from Starbucks and I basically live off peppermint hot chocolate from now until January.

A variation on Portuguese sweet bread (with anise seed) that my family only makes around T-Day/Xmas. Love it, love it, love. I eat it toasted with butter and a thin, thin slice of sharp cheddar.

Same with Pfeffernusse cookies - only at Xmas! They're all brown sugar, molasses, cloves, actual pepper, ginger. Rolled hot in powdered sugar and sealed up in a tin for a day or so - heaven!

Pfeffernusse are the best. A few years ago I found a recipe and tried to make some. They turned out great and now we make them ever year.

My mother's corn casserole. Pecan pie because pie is the best dessert, and pecan is a particularly delicious Thanksgiving treat.

can I say I love these answers

I love fudge and stuffing. Chocolate fudge is kind of hit or miss whether I’ll end up with fudge or frosting when I make it, but penuche/brown sugar fudge always turns out, and is delicious.

I know stuffing varies a lot depending on who makes it/where they’re from, etc, but I use half homemade cornbread and half stale sourdough, with celery, leeks, onions, yellow and green bell peppers, walnuts, and pine nuts, fake chicken broth (I’m vegetarian), and fresh rosemary, marjoram, sage, thyme, and parsley.

Fuck this season, all I want is for my buddy not to be dead. We were supposed to throw her a going-away these days, yeah, because she was emigrating to Canada... not six feet under goddamnit!

I like Christmas cookies in general.

I don't know the common term in English, but I love chocolate figurines, those hollow, unfilled little statues of Santa or the Easter bunny. I don't know if they really count as seasonal, they're just chocolate in a different form after all and anyway you can get chocolate figurines all year round in specialty shops in all kinds of shapes. Buuut there's just something about unwrapping the foil without tearing it and taking the first bite out of the hat/ears that I don't get from eating a piece from a bar.

And I just realized I missed my chance at getting a St. Martin's day treat. Bakeries sell shaped yeast pastries, the specific shape depending on the region.

So I guess I mostly like everyday treats in season specific shapes.

Oh, I almost forgot!

‪I almost forgot about PicoWriMo. If NaNoWriMo is the challenge to write 50,000 words in one month, then naturally PicoWriMo must be the challenge to write 50 words in one month. I should get started.‬

That sounds a lot more in my wheelhouse I have to say.
