Eh... I doubt it's rooted in wanting the poor to be happy poor. More that rich villains, especially rich adult villains, are one of the simplest types of villains to write. Barring legit emotional or mental disorders or disabilities, which usually aren't included, there's no way to punch down to a billionaire. So the audience is free to hate this character who theoretically needs nothing from anyone else and is set for life, and can rest assured that any evil actions they take are them choosing to act like a dick when they don't have to. Like who's gonna pressure them? The commoners? lol

Real life is more complicated than that, of course, and if it's idk rich ten year olds with awful parents like Draco in real life, that's complicated even further. But it being so common in fiction probably has more to do with it being just... easy, than any conspiracy

I'm the same with cat movies, honestly. I can watch some shows that don't involve sick or hurt cats. My Cat From Hell is still fun. But vet shows? Only ones I watch now are the two involving exotic animal vets so I know there won't be any cats.

The reaction I’ve seen from folks like Pervocracy is less “I’m superior” and more “I’m mad you took this fun and happy thing in my life and portrayed it as a rapefest and/or a sign of mental illness.”

Yeah, I get that. It's one thing for the LI to be ignorable or agreeable, but when they're the opposite of the LI I like to imagine for the character things get iffy.

I mean....duh? if Oda goes for direct mirrors it's obviously the character introduced in chapter 1 alongside Luffy, not someone else.

I love me some Smoker but he's his own character. Then again I won't believe Oda will do direct mirrors with anything Roger until he does it. One of the main themes of One Piece is Luffy does things his own way and only occasionally does it remind people of something similar but not exactly the same as Roger did. Then again, this fandom has some serious problems with understand nuance in the first place.
