The reaction I’ve seen from folks like Pervocracy is less “I’m superior” and more “I’m mad you took this fun and happy thing in my life and portrayed it as a rapefest and/or a sign of mental illness.”

Seconding this.

Also, I think people would criticize FSOG a hell of a lot less if it ever acknowledged that what it depicted was BDSM done very, very wrong. Because even though BDSM seems practically vanilla in fandom circles, IRL there are still a lot of people who don't know much about it. So when something like FSOG depicts it so, so inaccurately and abusively, a lot of people out there end up thinking that's what BDSM is like/about. And I can definitely see how that would piss off people who are actually in the lifestyle or whatever.

My problem with it is people who think FSOG is sexy doing BDSM in an unsafe way if they try it out, or not being able to determine if someone is actually being abusive.

Too many stories I've heard about guys choking women out WITHOUT ASKING IF THEY LIKE THAT, I'm afraid. Though that's probably mostly caused by exposure to porn and not a series of novels.

Ayup.

Also, what people said below. It's dangerous not to even hint, in universe, that safe, sane, and consensual is a thing. Or, hell, put it on a flyleaf.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-29 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
You should be aware of the basic practices and principles of what it is, however you choose to depict it, and you don't need to be in lifestyle BDSM for that

Your points feel like they're a little contradictory.

Do you like FSOG because the inaccurate stalkery shit is your jam, or do you write stuff like FSOG because people with meatspace kink scenes are ~privileged~ and you're, I guess, incapable of research?

Because 1 is valid but 2 sounds dumb, and also makes it sound like 1 is just an excuse for not doing your homework.

I agree. I get it - there are ways to do BDSM that are 'safe' and 'sane', and ways to do it that are not.

When i'm reading, 99 percent of the time, I want my BDSM without any kind of blah blah talking it out, setting up rules, check ins, etc. I just want my smut with a side of flogging or whatever, and that's that.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
So... So imply that there's consent there??? You can do that without talking it out, dude. It doesn't have to read like "rape fantasy but Tasteful and Pure and Not Like Other Filthy People."

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-11-29 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
So unless consent is specifically mentioned in some way, you just assume it's rape? WTH.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-29 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Imply. They said imply. If nothing about a scene implies consent, then yeah, it's definitely going to read like rape. That's just kind of how it works.

Yes, if the author doesn't make an effort to *specifically mention consent* in some way, either outright or implied, then *You* think it's rape.

Which...really. Don't wanna live in your world.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-29 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
You can imply consent without explicitly writing it, you absolute dumbfuck.

"Both parties are very obviously into it, even if it's BDSM and thus rough." There's the very simple way. Use your fucking actions and learn to write or deal with your rape fantasy lite being called what it is. I don't care about if you get off on rape fantasy, I care about you calling it what it is instead of "tee hee it's BDSM."

Like shit, here's an actual example.

"Chris was rough with Kate, using the riding crops she kept in her secret stash. She loved it. She always does, in their trysts."

Implication of consent because it puts both parties in her room with her stash and says outright she's loving it, and that it's a common theme with them.

This!

Honestly, in fiction you don't have to do that much to imply a character is into it. Just...describe them enjoying it, and describe their actions as indicating that they're enjoy it. If the characters are roleplaying that it's non-consensual, then just describe the physical and mental pleasure of the character who's struggling and saying "no."

Fuck off, gobshite. If i don't mention consent even *obliquely*, it is STILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY RAPE. Just because you need it in what you read/write doesn't mean everyone else does.

You are EXACTLY the person the secret talked about.

People take issue with 50 Shades because it portrays BDSM wrong. People read the book and try to imitate what they read, which results in injuries, not to mention giving people that practice it a bad rep. I think what people mean by "I only read BDSM if done right" is that they don't support or endorse incorrectly practiced BDSM.

Leaving aside the BDSM issue these novels are so terribly written I don't know how anyone found it hot. I've read smut fanfic that remained fanfic way sexier than any passage in FSOG.

Yes, it's fiction, but back at the height of its popularity we had idiots showing up at my local munch looking for "their Christian Grey". Only to recoil in horror when they discovered that by and large BDSM communities are full of just regular Joes and Janes. They wanted a handsome gazillionaire, not a balding middle-aged plumber with a generous potbelly. And it was extra work keeping an eye on them because there were also predators who kept trying to crash the party and they looked a lot more like the role said idiots were looking to have filled.

That's why I get a little preachy when it seems someone didn't get the memo that fantasy =/= reality. Which does actually happen with startling frequency.
