101. ... You do know some people just really like writing/reading about dysfunctional relationships and that it doesn't reflect on their psychology, right?

107. Uh... dude, no, you're a retard. The entire point of the series is what makes a person a "real person," whether Chii could have feelings and that Hideki could grow up from a perverted boy who was mostly interested in sex into someone who could fall in love and choose that love, and stay with her, forever, despite sex not even being an option anymore. Hideki became a person to admire by the end of the series, and Chii turned out to be much more than just "an inanimate object," but someone who could feel and love despite being "just a computer."

111. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO THINK THAT A PAIRING IS GOOD OR FLUFFY OR HEALTHY TO SHIP IT. IT IS POSSIBLE TO SHIP A DYSFUNCTIONAL PAIRING WHILE KNOWING THAT THE PAIRING IS DYSFUNCTIONAL. SOME PEOPLE FIND THIS INTERESTING. GOD DAMMIT PEOPLE GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS. THANKS MUCH.

/caps of despair

112. ... (: ♥

115. Mayuri is awesome, because he's so fucked up. 8D

117. Uh, you know, romance can work that way. Thanks lots. Also? Maybe you should understand that fandom can appreciate a brotherly relationship AND a romantic/sexual one AT THE SAME TIME. You know. Enjoying gen fics and Simon/Nia fics and Kamina/Yoko fics and still liking Kamina/Simon. It can happen! Just FYI.

126. THIS ISN'T A RANT AT YOU, OP, BUT. JUST. Saying someone's a "poser" just because they started liking something due to liking another thing first is fucking retarded anyway. What the hell? If someone is a fan of the Beatles who the fuck cares what lead them to the Beatles? You can't be a "poser" if you like the fucking band. Ugh.

130. Then you haven't read some of the best shippy fic out there. ;) Believe me, you can have multi-chaptered, incredibly well-characterized, awesome-plotted fic with ships in it, or even semi-focusing on ships.

134. Some people are just like that. There's nothing wrong with it, not at all. *hugs*

139. ... ooh, hadn't heard of the first movie. Looks interesting! I'll have to check that one out. |D

That said, from what little I just looked up about it, I can definitely see where you're coming from~ And that's awesome.

140. Sorry, the mere presence of Lloyd is distracting me. 8D

142. Russell/Ed? Needs moar. :|b

146. A-awww. ): Don't worry, everything's right in the FAQ at the main Reborn comm -- [livejournal.com profile] hitman_reborn -- and it tends to be pretty obvious what pairing is in a fic anyway from the summary, usually. And not everyone uses the numbers/exclusively uses the numbers, so... ♥ Good luck!

150. IAWTS. Completely. Thank you.

151. Oh, dammit, there is nothing wrong with Bond movies. D: NOTHING. Sheeeeesh.

153. OH NOES PEOPLE NEED TO STOP HAVING FUN TO PLEASE MY AESTHETIC VALUE SYSTEMMMMMMMMM shut the hell up. And no, I don't agree with you. People like you are the fucking reason several of my friends are too intimidated to dress up, and spend conventions feeling left out of a huge chunk of the excitement and fun, even when the outfits they want to wear are completely fucking tasteful and they look just fine. Grow the hell up.

And why don't they just become thin? Society will always mock "fat" people because it's mere survival instinct.

Re: 153

... You're joking, right? You are seriously joking, right?

Brb just gonna go update my friends and alert them that after years of trying to lose weight the solution is "just become thin."

And no, "society" will not "always mock fat people" because it's "survival instinct." People mocking other people for what they look like isn't "natural," it's assholery.

Re: 153

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a person with genetic predisposition to obesity. I have hormonal problems, too. It took 5 years to stop being fat, but it's all about effort and will power. I exercise everyday and eat adequate food to keep myself fit and healthy. I'm also doing better than ever in college, the quality diet and exercise do wonders for your brain and concentration.

So much for being "shallow".

Re: 153

[identity profile] skymeetssea.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
What are you waiting for, a gold star?

Re: 153

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say you were shallow. When did I say shallow?

It took 5 years to stop being fat

That's great! So... for five years people need to stop doing something they enjoy doing because they're "too fat" for it? Despite the fact that most of the cosplayers the OP is probably talking about don't wear revealing outfits.

And now that you're at a healthy weight, do you go around mocking people who aren't? Sorry, but if you do, I don't care if you used to be fat and worked hard not to be. You are still, when making fun of people about their appearance and making them feel horrible about themselves for no good reason, being an asshole. And if you don't, I don't see what your flak is. I'm not saying that people who are at an unhealthy weight shouldn't try to drop the extra weight, I'm saying that people who mock them are being jerks. Because it's entirely unnecessary and all it does is make the person feel bad about themselves, and that = assholery. I'm sorry, but it does.

Re: 153

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
True, generalizations are horrible. Support will help them with their problem more than mocking them.

Re: 153

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
*nods* I think I'm mostly upset with this secret because I have three friends who feel absolutely hideous whenever they cosplay. One of them has been trying to lose weight for quite a while now, because she has horrible self-esteem when it comes to her appearance, and she knows that it's causing her health problems. She cosplayed like... once, as Haruhi from Ouran, in the boys' uniform, which is pretty much the most tasteful outfit ever because lol layers. Attitudes like the one put forth in the secret have helped convinced her that she can never do that again, despite having a lot of fun with it, until she loses all that weight. That makes me really sad, that it's like... become a fandom-regulated hobby or something.

Re: 153

[identity profile] iamthemurderer.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What a shame. :/ I'm 232 pounds myself, slowly but surely losing it at the moment, and I've been cosplaying since 2003 when I was even bigger. I'm getting ready to do a Haruhi as well.
Hell, if your friend is littler than I am, tell her to dress up and find me at a convention. I'll take the attention off of her for her and make her feel more comfortable. XD
Cosplay is all about having a good time with your friends. Sometimes I feel a twinge of sorrow as I look at picture of myself in my costumes and think about how much better I would look if I was skinnier. But you know, you can't let other people's expectations and judgements of you define your life or stop you from doing what you enjoy!

Like Dr. Seuss said, "Do what you want and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Yes - this is why I bother to respond to these kinds of moronic secrets at all. I want people to know that there are those of us out there who remember when dressing up at a convention was celebrated simply because you were geeky enough to DO it. For me, if you're cosplaying from my fandom? I WILL take your picture no matter how bad the costume itself is, because you are representing as a fellow fan, and THAT excites me.

lol, social darwinism

Re: 153

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I should elaborate: You know you're full of shit, right? You realize that if this were true, fat would be desireable in certain parts of the world, right? And that people wouldn't be aiming for completely unattainable body types, right? Much less worshipping extremely unhealthy ones? Ones that aren't suited for sturdiness and survival?

Human beings have very few instincts. You can say whatever you want to make yourself feel better about buying into that bullshit, but at the end of the day, it's still bullshit.

has study human behavior and evolutionary science/psychology

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Survival instinct? HA!

It has nothing to do with any instinct. Centuries ago, heavy women were considered more beautiful in some societies. They still are in certain places. And now, severely under weight people are considered beautiful in the West. Anorexic models aren't healthy, yet no 'survival instinct' makes us want to mock them.

And if you're saying it's okay to mock bigger people because being fat is unhealthy (which it is), then perhaps we should also mock people who smoke, people who don't wear seatbelts, people who fuck other people without condoms, people who ride their motorcycles without a helmet, people who don't wash their hands all the time, people who go on unhealthy diets, etc, etc...

But we don't make fun of them nearly as much as we alienate and make fun of fat people, do we?

Also, why don't they just become thin? Because they're addicted to food. Alcoholics should certainly give up the habit, but it's easier said than done. It's a similar situation with food addiction (I don't mean to make light of the severity of alcholism by saying that).

So, in conclusion, you're an idiot and fuck off.

Re: has study human behavior and evolutionary science/psychology

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
What about us who mock smokers, fat people, alcoholics, junkies, and just everything else in existence?

Re: has study human behavior and evolutionary science/psychology

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I suppose you're an equal opportunity asshole, lol.

And do you think all those groups are made fun of equally? Smokers are unhealthy and made fun of, but not half as much as fat people in my experience.

Making fun of a fat person is not really about health or instinct, as this poster implied. It's about our society's standard of beauty. To say it's ingrained is ridiculous. That's really the point I was trying to make.

Re: has study human behavior and evolutionary science/psychology

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed, kinda the point.

Although they are not made fun of equally by other people -I do try my best to make fun of everyone and everything (including myself)equally.

I could go on about the way society's standard of beauty is till the cows come home -or I can make fun of the supermodel with an eating disorder complaining about being too fat while puking her carrot stick and the morbidly obese guy lamenting his weight over a smorgasbord now and get back to looking for porn.

Your point itself was obvious, I was simply trying and failing at being funny.

Re: has study human behavior and evolutionary science/psychology

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see. Sorry, kinda hard to catch on the internet.

Re: has study human behavior and evolutionary science/psychology

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mock thin people because I'm too busy being horrified that I can count someone's ribs. I don't find them pretty. Thin arms are really creepy, too. It makes me think that if I grab their arm, it'll break. I prefer people who look like they can take a strong wind without flying away.

Re: has study human behavior and evolutionary science/psychology

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

But in the modeling industry, the movie and television business, and our general culture (diets, beauty magazines, etc), thin is still in to an unhealth degree.

I personally just think that GAY SIMON is pretty OOC. He is so straight it hurts... and I'm pretty sure sexual-orientation is a pretty definite character trait. People are not made GAY or HETEROSEXUAL or BISEXUAL, plenty of genetic factors are involved there.

Re: 117

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
People aren't "turned gay" or "turned straight," but people can recognize bisexuality (or even a complete flip of their perceived sexuality) while having considered themselves one or the other in the past. And I think it's hard to say for certain any character's sexuality unless it specifically is made a plot point. A male character who only expresses an interest in female characters is not necessarily canonically straight, it just means he has a strong canonical lean towards women. People can be mostly attracted to one gender and find just one, two, or a handful of people of the other gender that they ever find attractive in their lifetimes.

You'd have to be more careful to keep the character IC, it's true! A woman-chaser being gay in a fic put into a slash pairing for fic (lol edited because of the fail in that phrasing) takes finagling for it to not seem OOC, but in the end, the character trait for that character is that they are a woman-chaser -- not that they are only ever attracted to women ever, with no exceptions. Simon ICly is a typical boy with a strong leaning towards women, but I don't think it's an impossibility that he could ever be attracted to a man.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
But that is a rather weak strawman argument...

Re: 117

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... exactly how so? I don't see how it's a straw man when I know guys who are almost 100% only attracted to women who know of one or two males they would hit. I personally had to totally rethink my sexuality from heterosexual to lesbian in the course of just a couple years. It happens. It's not just a case of "only attracted to males," "only attracted to females," or "attracted to both genders equally all the time."

Re: 117

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
But Simon is a character that grew as a straight man to his 40-year-old birthday. :/

We all know Simon is a special case due to how much of his personality was defined by Nia and his love for her, too.

Re: 117

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, Simon is a character that grew as a straight man to the point where he met Nia, then became Nia-sexual to his 40-year-old birthday. XD Him having eyes for no one but her, male or female, doesn't totally say anything about his sexuality except "OMG NIA." Also, by my comment there, I wasn't specifically addressing Simon and Kamina/Simon, just in general. However...

Simon is definitely a special case, and I do think it's harder to write him believably in a relationship with someone other than Nia during the points in canon where she is in the series. If he had not met her, however, I think all bets would be off. Fic taking place before he met her or after her death, too, has much more possibility. And I am totally of the opinion that if either Simon or Nia had expressed interest in other people while at the same time being together, in the end, the other would be okay with that. (Can you see Nia begrudging him that, seriously?) Again, all of this would have to be AU, but it could be written in a very IC manner as long as authors take into account some major points about Simon's personality and his relationship with Nia.

Plus, in the end, I have to echo something I said yesterday: even if it is OOC not to have Simon with Nia, it does not make the character completely OOC. Not 100%, not by a long shot. So if a fan just wants to have fun pairing Simon with someone else (Kamina, Rossiu, Yoko, doesn't really matter), they can still keep Simon in character in every other way up to that point.

Tangentally, I'd love to see someone write two male characters in an OTP, romantic relationship, but make a point to have them never have sex. Ever. That way people can stop complaining that it's always "omg just all about the buttsex!"
