I liked Hopper too but season 3 made it reaaallly difficult. I also didn't really mind either way about Joyce/Hopper but the "will they won't they" thing (that we already went through with Nancy and Jonathan in previous seasons) was starting to wear thin tbh.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-06 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Harbour enough not to worry about it too much.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-06 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked him a lot in S1, and despite him fucking up pretty badly in S2 it seemed reasonably in character and I was willing to go with it, but by S3 there just wasn't anything left of the character that I liked. He was just an enormous, loud, rude jackass for most of it.

So yeah, I agree with the secret.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yepppp. I thought after season 2 he'd learned more and was heading in a good direction by the end. Character development and all that. But nope, guess not.

SAME

(Anonymous) 2019-12-06 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I could do without all the "will they won't they" in Stranger Things. It was boring with Jonathan and Nancy, it's boring with Hopper and Joyce with the added ugh factor of realizing that we're supposed to find Hopper's drunk, jealous asshattery funny and endearing. No thanks to all of that.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's sorta baffling how bad they are at it! Hopper and Joyce were characters that I already actively liked and wouldn't mind seeing get together, and they still did just an awful job of giving them a romance storyline.

Between the way he acted about Joyce and how he acted toward Mike (yes, yes, protective daddy, but he's still an asshole about it), I was well over Hopper by the time he (apparently) died.

Felt bad for El and Joyce for losing him, of course, but that's as far as it went.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-06 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

And I hate that people say "oh that's just normal dad stuff" like, um, no. It's really not. It's not good.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. The whole "protective dad gonna threaten muh daughter's boyfriends with muh guns" thing is like... Facebook level "humor", where people don't seem to grasp what a toxic version of masculinity that is.

This and how awful he was to Joyce when she genuinely lost track of time (because of shit going down) on the night of their dinner (and he did the masculine bullshit of being all like "it's not a date honest!" which is...mixed messages at best) is what made me start to go off him. His "death" didn't impact me as much as it should've because of it but I also wasn't affected by it because I already kind of guessed he'd be transferred to the Upside Down and somehow survive.

I'm not saying it was right for Joyce to get side tracked when she'd agreed to a prior engagement but he didn't exactly emphasise how important it was to him? Women are not mind readers. Also Joyce had lost the last person she was close to so I can understand why she's being a bit reserved in these matters.

You could sort of argue that it's a staple of the genre they're pastiching, but it's still not really an excuse to do it.

MTE.

It's rude to say but I was actually disappointed to realise he probably wasn't dead because by the time I'd finished s3 I was completely done with him as a character. He was awful, Joyce didn't deserve his bullshit on any level and I really don't want him to come back so they can 'be together'. Nope. No thanks.

I think the most aggravating thing was he'd already had his 'overprotective dad learns to trust his daughter' story in s2 and was done better but for some reason they decided to rehash it but 1000x worse in s3.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
God, same. I felt nothing when he died because I was just so sick of him by that point. At least season 2 Hopper had real human emotions and thought processes, for all his faults.

I totally agree. I liked the letter he left but that was one of the only things I liked about Season 3 Hopper. Maybe being in a Russian monster death prison (if he is) will teach him a few lessons.

Same, though I didn't really pull for Joyce/Hopper too much. But he got more and more yucky with his interactions with El, and with Joyce, and actually wish he *were* dead, I have no interest in him anymore.

I'm with you.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-06 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I really didn't like the way Hopper behaved most of the season. I would be okay with him coming back if he were more like season 1 Hopper, but I would be fine if he is actually dead and gone if they were going to continue him along the track he was on.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Joyce already had one shitty relationship in her life. She sure doesn't need another one.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
+1 I don't mind this ship if they did it properly, but if Hopper's going to be an alpha-jerk, forget it.

Here fucking here OP.

Joyce is my favourite character on this show, so watching him being a complete and utter jackass towards her and getting away with it was so fucking aggravating, it's one of the biggest reasons why I actually hated s3(and am on the fence about watching s4). I have no interest in watching her get lumped with him after all that bullshit and I'm someone that didn't have any feelings towards Joyce/Hopper as a ship until s3, well done for making me hate them show? Lmao. Christ.

I'm more upset that David Harbour appears to be in love with LILY ALLEN.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw that on some entertainment news site and thought...WTF.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with that? She's hot, and I like her music.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-08 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopper in season 3 felt like he was written by someone who would watch Beauty and the Beast and not realise Gaston is a villain, not a hero. Or possibly by someone who had never seen the prior two seasons, and had to construct Hopper's personality entirely from the scenes where he beats a guy up for information in s1, and the one where he yells at El and drives her away in s2.
