Between the way he acted about Joyce and how he acted toward Mike (yes, yes, protective daddy, but he's still an asshole about it), I was well over Hopper by the time he (apparently) died.

Felt bad for El and Joyce for losing him, of course, but that's as far as it went.

Same.

And I hate that people say "oh that's just normal dad stuff" like, um, no. It's really not. It's not good.

Exactly. The whole "protective dad gonna threaten muh daughter's boyfriends with muh guns" thing is like... Facebook level "humor", where people don't seem to grasp what a toxic version of masculinity that is.

This and how awful he was to Joyce when she genuinely lost track of time (because of shit going down) on the night of their dinner (and he did the masculine bullshit of being all like "it's not a date honest!" which is...mixed messages at best) is what made me start to go off him. His "death" didn't impact me as much as it should've because of it but I also wasn't affected by it because I already kind of guessed he'd be transferred to the Upside Down and somehow survive.

I'm not saying it was right for Joyce to get side tracked when she'd agreed to a prior engagement but he didn't exactly emphasise how important it was to him? Women are not mind readers. Also Joyce had lost the last person she was close to so I can understand why she's being a bit reserved in these matters.

DA but yepppp and to dismiss Joyce trying to explain what she was doing when she missed the date/not-date, after everything that had happened in Hawkins, was just downright stupid to boot. There was no reason for him to act like that.

You could sort of argue that it's a staple of the genre they're pastiching, but it's still not really an excuse to do it.

MTE.

It's rude to say but I was actually disappointed to realise he probably wasn't dead because by the time I'd finished s3 I was completely done with him as a character. He was awful, Joyce didn't deserve his bullshit on any level and I really don't want him to come back so they can 'be together'. Nope. No thanks.

I think the most aggravating thing was he'd already had his 'overprotective dad learns to trust his daughter' story in s2 and was done better but for some reason they decided to rehash it but 1000x worse in s3.

God, same. I felt nothing when he died because I was just so sick of him by that point. At least season 2 Hopper had real human emotions and thought processes, for all his faults.

Right???

Show kills Hopper: oh no this is so sad! :(((

Me: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Knowing that he's going to be back doesn't make me happy, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I was sad for El's sake but also honestly I've wanted her to live with Joyce the whole time, so. Win-win for me.

Yeah, same. I liked him in season 1, he definitely had some flawed behaviour in s2 but it wasn't his entire character -- but in season 3 he was just completely and utterly such a macho asshole, it made the whole thing deeply, deeply uncomfortable to watch. The extreme "fighting as sexual tension" thing was so bad, it was basically nauseating; his relationship with Joyce in season 3 never felt anything other than super toxic. I was legitimately rooting for the Russian assassin to finish him off, and distressed whenever he DIDN'T die. I was horrified when Joyce agreed to go on a date with him, and genuinely relieved when his apparent death prevented that.

I totally agree. I liked the letter he left but that was one of the only things I liked about Season 3 Hopper. Maybe being in a Russian monster death prison (if he is) will teach him a few lessons.
