Rumple's revolving door on Once Upon a Time. Actually all the turns on Once, but Rumple's was the worst since we were supposed to remain sympathetic to him after he went back to evil over and over again.

The movie version of Loki's turn was good, but now they are writing it so that it is canon that he never joined Thanos willingly and was brainwashed. That's stupid and ruins his arc and the character.

Draco's on Harry Potter. And Snape's. Honestly. They were both small time bullies, and we were supposed to overlook that they never actually felt bad about that part just because they stopped being on the side of Voldemort. Just no.

Favorites: Darth Vader, Missy on Doctor Who, Nebula, Sauron (turning evil journey), Willow on Buffy (I know some people don't like it, but her story worked for me except for Kennedy), Spike on Buffy (I liked that he chose to get his soul back and chose redemption, unlike Angel), Cara Mason on Legend of the Seeker

I thought it was always canon that Loki didn't join Thanos willingly? Given that he looked like shit warmed over from square one in Avengers (2012), I figured we were always supposed to think that there was at least torture and heavy coercion going on, if not active brainwashing. The Other's whole 'he will make you long for something sweet as pain' thing did lend to the impression as well.

I mean, I'm not saying Loki wasn't a villain at the time as well, he had just tried to genocide a planet, but I always figured he'd fallen through space, landed in the worst possible place, did whatever was necessary to get OUT of that place, and got a few swipes in at Thor and Earth while he was at it. He talked a good game while he was at it, but it's Loki, so that was pretty much a given. I don't think he was ever supposed to have signed up with Thanos willingly, in the sense of 'I agree with what you're doing and want to help'. It always seemed more 'I will do whatever you want so you don't kill me, until I get the opportunity to get away with relative safety' at the absolute best.

I always took it as "You help me, I help you" combined with Thanos being persuasive. I think the fear was just the fear that all his followers and allies fear because he'll torture/kill anyone who messes up. I don't think Loki agreed with him, but I think Loki wanted to mess with Thor because he was angry and Thanos encouraged that anger and convinced him that by helping Thanos Loki could get things he wanted. I never took it to be forced coercion beyond the fact that Thanos threatens everyone, even his followers.

I mean, persuasive in the sense of 'do what I want and you might get something you want, refuse and you die incredibly slowly and badly', sure? That's still pretty much coercion, though, as it's not like Loki had any realistic opportunity to refuse. He was alone and had just fallen through the void when Thanos found him, he was strained and wild-eyed when he landed on Earth afterwards, and the main interaction we see between him and Thanos' forces, in the form of the Other, turned into sweet promises of things worse than torture in very short order. So, you know. I always figured he basically never had much of a choice, and just determined to make the best of it as much as possible and get his swipes in at people he hated and/or didn't care about while he tried to extract himself.

The brainwashing thing is more of a reach, but it's still plausible just with what we're given in Avengers. The Other spoke in Loki's head, Loki gets said head violently recalibrated by the Hulk at the end of the movie, and it makes sense to put a failsafe in when you're sending a complete stranger to do a job for you using the only one of the six infinity stones you currently possess.

I agree.

Even without the Staff of Mind Control in play, Loki did *not* look like a happy camper when working for Thanos. Coercion is extremely plausible.

He still, you know, tried to commit genocide in Thor 1, mind. Still a villain. But coercion is plausible.

Yeah I thought it was pretty heavily implied. I mean, the whole "gets his head violently recalibrated" is exactly what happens to Hawkeye to snap him out of the mind control as well and in the very same movie no less.
