Playing with Fire

Okay, I'm... I'm gonna be real impolite here about a cheesy family film that's basically just the same thing as The Pacifier, Kindergarten Cop, The Tooth Fairy - 'Big Tough Man must interact with Spunky Children, Hilarity EnsuesTM'
But like fuck is letting three little shitheads take over a goddamn fire station a fun idea! What, do we get a scene where a family of four burns to death in their house because the obnoxious 9-year-old boy tied all the firemen up with their own hose? So jolly!
Forgive me for taking this all way too seriously, but a significant percentage of my country is currently ON FIRE so I am feeling a little but HUMOURLESS WHEN IT COMES TO THIS SORT OF THING.

I'm going to be honest, I'm sorry that the situation in Australia (I assume) is as bad as it is but I think you're overreacting about the film.

Nayrt

Thinking that people burning to death isn't fun is an overreaction? Are you one of tho people who sees someone express mild disfavor and goes "OMG HAAAAAATERS!"

If people burn to death in the movie, I'm fully prepared to accept that it wouldn't be funny. It looks like it's a fairly typical family comedy set in a fire station.

And a fire station can be serious, but that doesn't mean that it can't also be portrayed in a way that's light and funny, either. How many comedies are there about police, for Pete's sake?

Yet another NAYRT and I can actually think of another movie with a comedic fire department, Roxanne, that has Steve Martin as modern Cyrano de Bergerac—and a fire chief—and I’m sure there’s more. I mean, Hitler was horrifying and The Producers is still funny as hell. I don’t think exempting topics from comedy is a good idea.

Yeah, agreed. The whole point of comedies is that you aren't supposed to think too hard about the larger ramifications of what happens in them, you're just supposed to laugh at the on-screen antics. Most comedies fall apart if you actually take them 100% seriously in regards to what goes on during them.

I mean that's a fairly solid critique. Even the name kinda sets off the wrong message for some harmlessly fun childrens movie. It almost makes me think there is some sort of scene where everything goes wrong, (the phrase does finish with getting burned after all) even it that's most definitely not the case. But then again I'm used to taking things like this way too seriously.
At least you can take some comfort in the most likely empty theatre when it comes out?

Yeah, no. That pisses me off too.

I mean, I like premise of 'big tough man with spunky child' but I hate the setting for this one. There's places where that's funny. A fire station isn't funny.

Yeah, i saw the trailer and was like 'that is not how that fucking works at all'. I mean - i work at my local fire department; you do not let anyone, particularly kids, just....run around. Period. Plus - wtf, you can't take them on a run, you can't leave them unsupervised in the firehouse, this is just dumb.

Take care and be safe! We're all watching what's going on (if you're in Australia, which I guess you are), and hoping everything will get under control and out soon.

AYRT - Yeah, I'm in Australia. I'm nowhere near the fires, but people I care about are, and... well, it's not like the place I live hasn't been hit by bushfires before! So thanks, we hope it'll be under control soon too.
Our shithead PM refused to give the firefighters more funds, though, so who fucking knows! >:(

I'm pretty sure I saw this trailer when things were still dicey in California with regards to fire (I don't live there but I have family who had to evacuate temporarily, including one aunt who lost her house to the fires two years ago), or maybe it was soon after things stopped being so dicey, and it felt in bad taste then. It also struck me as just an overwhelmingly stupid-looking movie that made me not want to watch it even leaving aside the unrealistic aspects and the associations with real-life events. I can't get too upset because it just looks so bad.
