New movies / trailers

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted to ask people what they think of some recent films and some recently released trailers, and I thought it would be tidier to put them all under one thread!

Wonder Woman 1984

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
If you haven't seen it, here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfM7_JLk-84

I thought it was pretty bold of them to go with that costume towards the end there - the gold angel-looking one? - given how very weird it looks. I've never been a big fan of the 80's aesthetic, though, so that might just be me.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not thrilled they brought Steve back, but I'm not surprised. I liked him and all. I just think that if you kill a major character off for the emotional impact, don't undermine or negate it.

Re: Wonder Woman 1984

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
For me it will depend on why/how he's back and what happens with him.

Meanwhile, why is no one talking about his fanny pack??

Re: Wonder Woman 1984

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC that costume is from the 90s, which makes it even weirder.

Re: Wonder Woman 1984

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll watch it for that great remix of "Blue Monday."

Black Widow

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing personal, Black Widow fans, but I just... don't care. I haven't cared about the character of Black Widow since the first Avengers movie, and Endgame was such a fucking slog of a movie, this might be the first MCU film in years that I haven't been to in cinemas?
(Also, super nitpicky - why the fuck is there four Russian characters sitting around a table in Russia engaged in casual conversation in English?)

Re: Black Widow

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I like spy action movies

so if it's a good spy action movie I'll probably watch it

Re: Black Widow

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Marvel's attempts at "spy action" are on the level of 80s James Bond, so I don't have high expectations.

Mulan

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen much discussion of the new trailer or anything to do with the film, really. Even from people I follow who I know to be big Disney fans. Personally I saw the first trailer, went "Gosh, Disney has made a wuxia film", and stopped caring at all.
I'm sure it will make money, because Disney owns everything and can straight-up force cinemas to screen what they want, but does anyone actually care that much about this movie?

Re: Mulan

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a lot of people on my TL who *really* loved the trailer.

That doesn't guarantee it'll be a monster hit, but there's at least some audience for it.

The idea of the hawk turning into a witch is super friggin' cool, but that's all that grabs me.

Re: Mulan

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't looked into the movie much at all, but I do love Mulan. I'll probably watch it at some point, but I highly doubt I'll see it in theatres.

Re: Mulan

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a big Disney fan, but if it's a pretty looking wuxia film, I'm more likely to see it.

Re: Mulan

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
apparently the main actress supports the hongkong police so i am like MEH about all of this.

Same here. Lost interest after she posted that CCP-approved image. She's not some Chinese starlet who needs to conform to survive. She's a fucking American.

Playing with Fire

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd5GlZUpfaM

Okay, I'm... I'm gonna be real impolite here about a cheesy family film that's basically just the same thing as The Pacifier, Kindergarten Cop, The Tooth Fairy - 'Big Tough Man must interact with Spunky Children, Hilarity EnsuesTM'
But like fuck is letting three little shitheads take over a goddamn fire station a fun idea! What, do we get a scene where a family of four burns to death in their house because the obnoxious 9-year-old boy tied all the firemen up with their own hose? So jolly!
Forgive me for taking this all way too seriously, but a significant percentage of my country is currently ON FIRE so I am feeling a little but HUMOURLESS WHEN IT COMES TO THIS SORT OF THING.

I'm going to be honest, I'm sorry that the situation in Australia (I assume) is as bad as it is but I think you're overreacting about the film.

Re: Playing with Fire

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I mean that's a fairly solid critique. Even the name kinda sets off the wrong message for some harmlessly fun childrens movie. It almost makes me think there is some sort of scene where everything goes wrong, (the phrase does finish with getting burned after all) even it that's most definitely not the case. But then again I'm used to taking things like this way too seriously.
At least you can take some comfort in the most likely empty theatre when it comes out?

Re: Playing with Fire

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. That pisses me off too.

I mean, I like premise of 'big tough man with spunky child' but I hate the setting for this one. There's places where that's funny. A fire station isn't funny.

Yeah, i saw the trailer and was like 'that is not how that fucking works at all'. I mean - i work at my local fire department; you do not let anyone, particularly kids, just....run around. Period. Plus - wtf, you can't take them on a run, you can't leave them unsupervised in the firehouse, this is just dumb.

Take care and be safe! We're all watching what's going on (if you're in Australia, which I guess you are), and hoping everything will get under control and out soon.

Re: Playing with Fire

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure I saw this trailer when things were still dicey in California with regards to fire (I don't live there but I have family who had to evacuate temporarily, including one aunt who lost her house to the fires two years ago), or maybe it was soon after things stopped being so dicey, and it felt in bad taste then. It also struck me as just an overwhelmingly stupid-looking movie that made me not want to watch it even leaving aside the unrealistic aspects and the associations with real-life events. I can't get too upset because it just looks so bad.

Knives Out

(Anonymous) 2019-12-12 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Now there are enough comments that this will collapse... Has anyone here seen Knives Out?
How did you find it? I watched it yesterday and enjoyed it very much - the were a lot of laughs to be had.

Re: Knives Out - SPOILERS

I know it's pure spite, and not really in line with her character anyway, but
[SPOILERS]
I want to read some fic set after the movie, where Marta gets to enjoy her new wealth and making the Thrombeys *squirm*.

This is the anon who wrote that secret about not being able to find irredeemable arseholes attractive: this movie has a pretty good demonstration of that in the character Chris Evans plays. He is a total douchebag, and though I certainly wouldn't kick Chris Evans out of bed, when I think of his character it's just... Ugh. Nope.
