...why do they change the names?

Short answer: "It's easier for children to pronounce."

Long answer: it's a symptom of long-standing deeply-held racist concepts in anime localization where "average" (read as: white) children are presumed to be incapable of understanding that Japanese people exist and are the main characters of anything, and white parents get offended that their white offspring "can't relate" to a Japanese protag or learn their "difficult" names or anything, so all characters are localized Western and white. This trend continues to this day.

Adding on to the anon who mentioned ease of pronunciation, (which is indeed the major reason) name changes can also be a way to localize things. I find most dubbed anime (used to?) imply that the show took place in the area the dub was made for. Which meant that the more commonplace (ambient) characters received named that suited the audience viewing it.

Yu-Gi-Oh has a special case where they were forced to change certain names, and is probably the one of the better dubs in terms of re-naming, imo.
