But at the same time his deck style is pure plot armor - he relies on luck and that means whichever way the story wants him to go determines whether he will magically have good luck or terrible luck, and that means it doesn't come down to game mechanics at all.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)Not only in joey/jonouchi is considered a top 5 duelist in DM but in GX as well, Pegasus says so. And in GX archetype decks are a thing, yet joey/jonouchi is one of the best with a deck without a real archetype (if he wants to play red eyes atticus/fubuki has a better deck for that), no multiple copies of a card, no support cards for his aces and multiple gamble cards, so basically the only way that this is possible is if he just amazingly talented

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)I was pretty proud of having all of his cards though, ngl. but realistically Kaiba should have kicked his ass every time.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)So yeah if a person think that without major deck changes (or plot armor) characters from DM can win against people like akaba reiji with his DDD Combo or soulburner with his deck that pros actually use, they are delusional

In GX, like, Juudai is LITERALLY the "Warrior of Darkness" who talks to aliens and is destined to save the world from the Light, of COURSE he is unknowingly cheating via magical draw skills, c'mon (though there is that great scene where he shuffles a card into Shou's deck in front of everyone and nobody catches him, so maybe he's just an actual cheat, which is my favorite interpretation of art!fails throughout the series that give him too many/wrong cards)

(Anonymous) 2019-12-16 12:48 am (UTC)(link)This is one of the reasons why I find Puppyshipping so interesting, like in Battle City Kaiba went out of his way to specifically exclude Joey from his tournament, just because he can.
About the secret though, I really think Joey could have a one up on Kaiba if things fall in his favour, Yugi has the heart of the cards and (depending the timeframe) the Pharaoh to have his back, and given the fact it's usually them who give tips and inspire Joey when he's in a tough duel, I don't think they'd be offering their advice quite as liberally if they were the one to duel Joey.
And just to add an even more controversial opinion into the mix, I think Rex Raptor makes better use of the Red Eyes Black Dragon more than anyone in any of the series'.
