if you are considering the current meta all of the decks of the duel monsters characters are garbage. Not all DM cards are garbage for the current meta or the current anime (as Revolver showed in Vrains) but the decks that the characters used are no longer viable

back in the...oh holy shit that was 15 years ago. when me and my partner used to cosplay Yugi and Kaiba, we had accurate character decks. Yugi's actual deck is impossible to play with, it's loaded with too many 5 stars that you can't summon and way overloaded with magic and trap cards.

I was pretty proud of having all of his cards though, ngl. but realistically Kaiba should have kicked his ass every time.

in the duel monsters anime they never really followed the actual game rules, especially in the first season, starting from GX they began to try to follow the real game more closely (the're some redicuslus moments still but way less). But the days of the way the DM characters duel are over, back then a turn was basically summon a monster and a face down card, today people make jokes about how yugioh has 10 minutes turn with combo afther combo and duels rarely has more than 5 turns. There're so many things you can do now ad so many types of summon and yet konami never revamped the DM characters decks, they still have a bunch of non effect monsters, only one copy of cards, don't use more types of summon and don't really have archetype decks. There's a reason why ygo fans like to do challenges of playing with decks of DM characters (because is really hard) or imagine how their decks would look like follwing how the game is today.
So yeah if a person think that without major deck changes (or plot armor) characters from DM can win against people like akaba reiji with his DDD Combo or soulburner with his deck that pros actually use, they are delusional

They didn't have to follow the game rules, because they're often not actually playing the game. Like, in DM, duels are often stand-ins for an ancient magical ritual using giant stone tablets to summon monsters from another world (Shadow Realm/Khenti/whatever). Many of the cards are connected to spirits that can affect our physical world as we know it. And the game is often being played by the reincarnated or trapped souls of powerful priests/people who have activated the magical Millennial items, and has major consequences (the entire Doom/Doma arc).

In GX, like, Juudai is LITERALLY the "Warrior of Darkness" who talks to aliens and is destined to save the world from the Light, of COURSE he is unknowingly cheating via magical draw skills, c'mon (though there is that great scene where he shuffles a card into Shou's deck in front of everyone and nobody catches him, so maybe he's just an actual cheat, which is my favorite interpretation of art!fails throughout the series that give him too many/wrong cards)
