I feel increasingly like recommendations in general are just way harder and less useful than we tend to assume

or maybe I'm just overly picky and weird

Sometimes you have to just ignore people

Would Anyone Read This

Do you have a fic idea you want to write but you're not sure anyone wants to read? Describe it here! There's always an audience. Unless you're writing A Serbian Film or Human Centipede.

Genderbent HP trio(and Ginny) ends up in another world thanks to a magical artifact and they are trying to get home while avoiding people who are after them for the artifact they have. Interspersed with flashbacks of the past years at Hogwarts showing how things happened with a gb'ed Trio. Fem!HarryxFem!Ron

#3 drives me nuts. I'm not sure people realize how presumptuous and arrogant it is to say, "Oh hey, I know you specifically said you did NOT want X but here's a whole bunch of X!"

It's like they have this basic lack of comprehension that the things they love aren't universally loved AND THAT'S JUST FINE. There's no need to "fix" that for other people or shove your faves at someone who said upfront they're not interested.

I know this is a comment secret and it's not necessarily about the Labyrinth fandom, but... Jareth x Sarah forever!!

It's an older game, so idk if this is necessary, but! Big-time spoilers for Tales of the Abyss!

***

I've been sitting for years on a fic idea, a "what if" where Luke had actually died at the Absorption Gate and all the fallout moving out from there. It revolved around the Closed Score starting to come true-- Peony gets assassinated in a massive military push by Kimlasca, and Jade, in a desperate attempt to maintain Malkuth's integrity long enough to implement some sort of plan to prevent the rest of the Score from happening, basically makes Nephry Empress by forging documents saying that she and Peony had been secretly married.

It was this whole political intrigue/sad adventure/drama thing, and I had the entire thing planned out and started, but... I stopped because I got scared, considering the way the climate of fandom has gone, and I was going to be playing around with Jade/Nephry as a sad/messed-up pairing. I thought about removing that dynamic, but it was so incredibly key to a couple of decisions that they both made later in the story that I couldn't see a way around it-- and, frankly, I didn't want to remove it because it's a relationship that I love exploring every angle of.

I've considered taking it back up, but idk. I'm not sure if it's worth the inevitable backlash I'd get, even if some people were still around that would enjoy it, lol.

To be fair to Sarah, the Labyrinth world is kind of hellish so I can actually understand her wanting to go back.

But in general I get what you mean, although my opinion would be highly dependent on whether I could cast magic or not, because if I'm just a regular Joe in a world full of magic? Um, yeah I might take the real world over that because I'd probably end up dead in a week.

Also if there's giant spiders I'm gonna be out regardless.

Ooof, yeah I feel you. Tbh I've never had much of an issue just looking through the tags for something and finding what I'm after, though sometimes I might ask around for a general sense of where to start if I want something specific.

But otherwise yeah, I'll never really ask for recs because I know what I like and I'm not 100% that another person will be able to fully take my likes/dislikes into account.

Depends on the reasoning for me

"the other place is objectively better and healthier but I must go back because my family shares genes with me no matter how shitty they are and
I looove them" nope

"the other place is objectively better and healthier, but I want to go back and fight the good fight to make my home world better and more like this one" sure

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a cowardly choice the vast majority of the time IMO

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed - even more so when the protagonist has clearly suffered some trauma in the course of their adventures and you just know there's zero chance they can talk to a therapist about it back home ("Yeah, I'm afraid of fire because the evil empire used their enslaved dragons to burn down a refugee camp I happened to be in, and though I escaped, many others did not." Yeah, that's gonna be a little awkward.)

Also when the protagonist has magic powers in the other world and gives them up to live in the real world. Fuck that! I wanna do magic!

*facepalm* Ppl are saying WHAT about Steven/Spinel shippers??? Also, what are they saying about Lapis?

I just got back into this fandom and I have noticed ppl are berating others a lot for shipping Gems with humans?? It's silly af. They justify it because of the age gaps but the Gems aren't human and most don't seem to have "adult" mindsets (plz refer to Aquamarine and Eyeball, among many others). Besides, by this reasoning, wouldn't Rose Quartz/Greg shippers be "pedos" too? But I haven't seen any discourse about that. (Or I may have missed it - I tend to stay away from most of the discourse crap best as I can.)

It's all stupid anyway and I'm not going to let others tell me who I'm allowed to ship.

When I was little I used to fall very firmly on the side of "I want to stay in the magic world" and there's a part of me (in my imagination) that still would. But it depends, could I still pop between worlds every now and again? "You can stay but can't see your family and friends ever again" would be hard for a lot of people I think.

I didn't know what to expect about this show as I read as little about it as possible. But I'm oddly satisfied I got "I'm a savage bounty hunter but oops guess I accidentally became a dad to this thing."

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you read Every Heart A Doorway and its sequels/prequels? Most if not all of the characters didn't choose to leave their magical worlds and the books deal with a lot of the aftermath of being forced out and what kinds of things they went through and lost.

That's irritating, I feel for you. I don't rec often but I usually take people at their word if they request it not to include certain themes or pairings.

The Lapis-bashing seems to take a couple flavors:

1a) That she's not recovering fast enough from her experiences and she's still so sad all the time
1b) That when she reacts according to her experiences and it makes someone sad (ie Peridot), that makes her an evil person
2) That Jasper's perspective of their fusion somehow carries more weight (and in general that a bad relationship has to have a clear abuser and victim and can't simply have been awful for both)

I will read anything below 10,000 words in case anyone needs a proofreader.

How is everyone doing?
