With Donna we got to know her for multiple seasons, and it was her character growth that was completely removed that some people get more upset about. With Chloe the mechanics of the game, when redoing or going back in time is the main function, the choice to 'undo' what happened to her is a more acceptable option.

Then again, all the endings for the game were pretty terrible. So there wasn't much to choose from.

Donna was only on the show for one season. Multiple episodes, but only one season.

I can't speak for the DW scenario, but I chose Chloe because I fucking hated the town by the end of the game and just wanted to ride out of there with my girlfriend.

I picked the Chloe ending out of pure spite because I was so pissed by the "preferred" ending that I didn't care how shit the Chloe ending was.

Chloe at least told Max to make the choice.

But in the preferred ending, after you choose to sacrifice Arcadia, Chloe immediately backs down from pretending she's ok with Max choosing and starts begging Max not to tear the picture because she'd rather die.

Huh? In the version I played she tells Max she will stick with her no matter what.

There are multiple endings to all the Life Is Strange games and the depend on all the choices the player makes throughout the game. If choices you made earlier in the game didn't convince Chloe that her life was more important than that of the town than will have different reactions based on the final choice you make.

I didn’t watch either of these, but the angry Tumblr posts about LIS were about killing off half of yet another lesbian couple. DW wasn’t talked about in the same terms because it wasn’t (yet) about lesbians.

The difference being Chloe's initial death was a result of her own action, and would have been exactly the same if either of them was a guy. Chloe stupidly went after someone about a missing friend, confronting them recklessly (and living recklessly, including playing chicken with trains) to the point that she seemed borderline suicidal. She flirted with death constantly, and it would have been the same context had she been a guy. So I, an actual lesbian, am okay, because she's not killed off for being with Max or because she's a lesbian, but because she's a character who's written as being unable to make good decisions and not be reckless with her own life.

Exactly. And it's entirely possible to play through the whole game without any kind of romantic relationship between the 2 main characters.

I'd be more accepting of this analysis if

1. It wasn't another tragic lesbian couple to add to the pile
2. There was an actual decent alternate ending that triggers based on your choices

As the ending of the game stands, there's only one ending. The other ending is tacked on garbage to make you feel like anything you did ultimately mattered.

These two situations are really not comparable but ok.
