(Anonymous) 2020-01-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)Lots of furries aren't interested in quadrupeds with a human level of intelligence, like a whole-ass dragon. Some are, which is why there's a weird amount of Lion King smut, but it's not necessarily a furry thing. Lots also aren't into a relatively humanoid animal with an entirely animal level of intelligence, like a werewolf (depending on the werewolf).
Furries (like from Zootopia, Road Rovers, Bucky O'Hare whatever, your standard anthro animal design) go with like... humanoid aliens in one venn circle. Vinnie from Biker Micer sits with Garrus and Predator. It's just how it is. Then shit like Red XIII, intelligent dragons and Nala or w/e go in another circle with any animal-like smart aliens. Then there's the weird shit like Pokemon and Toothless in another one. Reasonably smart, not human intelligence, but people wanna fuck them anyway for some reason.
Then the crossover is shit like werewolves. Can have human intelligence, don't always.... some do, some don't, different interpretations. They variously appeal to some furries, some monsterfuckers and ... the other group.
Monsterfuckers probably won't have much interest in furries, because they're not monsters, they're animal people. Likewise, strict furries aren't going to want to get dirty with Mothman because it's not an anthro animal as such.
It's definitely on the same graph of general weird non-human interest, but they can be distinct from one another and while crossover is certainly possible, it's not a given that it will be.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-12 12:17 am (UTC)(link)A character like Lola Bunny is furry. This level of anthro is what furry generally refers to.
A character like Pikachu would be referred to as bestiality or beast or feral, and it'd be a mistake to assume most people who call themselves furries are into this.
A character like Simba is somewhere between those two, more to the Pikachu side. A character like The Beast is also between those two, more to the Lola Bunny side.
Characters ranging from Lola to the Beast seem to be the most popular and generic type of furry fandom.
The Genie is xeno, or alien, or monster.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-12 12:56 am (UTC)(link)You can be a furry if you're just a fan of anthro-style films, to be fair.
You don't have to be interested in the sexual side of the fandom any more than you have to like hentai to be called an anime fan. If you like furry artwork and only dip your toes in to mainstream anthro-style movies and shows, you can call yourself a furry.
The dirty art is optional, not a requirement.
