Musicians who record versions of traditional love songs that are addressed to the same sex as themselves and change the pronouns so it's not ~gay~ are cowards.

You're only allowed to change the pronouns in a song if it makes it more gay. This should be a universal law

There is a sketch by Argentinian comedy group Les Luthiers dealing with this. One of the guys from the group has to step in last minute to sing a classic song by a female singer that is all about her romance (and subsequent heartbreak) with a man named Raúl.

The guy singing the song doesn't know it so he's reading it as he goes and frantically trying to change it so that he's singing about a woman named Raúla but it doesn't work at all.

"I rested my head on your hairy breast-- I mean not-hairy breast! Breasts!"

"You held me with your masculine hands. Feminine! Very feminine hands!"

It goes on until he reaches the last line of the song, where the original singer said that Raúl abandoned while she was pregnant, and the man singing it now just gives up.

Generally I hate when they change the pronouns. That said, an example of when it didnt bother me was when ryan Adams covered tswifts 1989 album in its entirety.

At that point, it's not just a cover. The project becomes a lot more formal. you're taking this large body of work and devoting yourself to making it your own in some way. so I can understand the value of changing the pronouns to maintain the sense of cohesion within the project.

That said, I'm always going to love Kings Of Leon for doing a fucking superb cover of Dancing On My Own and NOT changing the pronouns. Fuck yes.

Ehh, nayrt, but if you're going to go out of your way to cover someones entire album, you might as well copy it the words as well. I get how taking that kind of commitment and making it your own is a big task, but imo it makes more sense not to change the words.

See, I think the point is that he was making it his own. Not just doing a cover, but literally redoing these extremely confessional songs in a way that felt like an expression of himself. I think he wanted an end product that felt like it could've come from him in the first place - as if they were his songs, his self-expressions.

If he hadn't switched the pronouns, the experience would not have been as immersive, or as experimental, imo.

I'd literally never had a cover where I wanted the pronouns changed, until the 1989 cover, but in that specific case I will always feel it was the right call, and will always argue it was an artistically valid call.
