I think that it's an asshole move to intentionally omit tags just so that you can "surprise" your readers, especially when you are well aware that half your potential readers will hate this "surprise".

I've done this. I don't think it necssarily is an asshole move. Some people don't like to be spoiled in tags, and honestly, as a writer, not everyone wants to put in a tag because depending on the content, it may spoil something very early on. It can be a very gray area.

People who don't like to be spoiled in the tags have the option of not looking at the tags, though.

Oh, well then, they don't get to complain when they're surprised.

nayrt

It depends what you're spoiling. Parings, triggers, character death, genre, those all go into the tags because that's what the tags are there for, and what the readers enjoyment can be based on. Plot twists are different, but not adding vital tags just because you wanted to trick your readers is a very asshole move. It just is.

Well, sure, if the intent is to fuck with the readers. But that may not be the intention of the author.

Also, what do you do when the plot twist and a trigger are one in the same? How am I supposed to know you're easily triggered by a single corpse that's barely described if it's the twist itself?

I meant common triggers, not a trigger one out of a thousand readers might have. For example rape could be your plot twist, and you should tag for that. You can't know everyones triggers, and if it's only a quick cut to a scene with a dead body, then that doesn't really need the warning. Though character death should be warned if it is happening to a main character. Minor characters don't necessarily need the warning unless you're killing off a lot of them. (though I would personally prefer that people use it, but that's just me)

Nah. You're not actually owed spoilers for every single thing that will happen in a fic.

Good to know. Now I can write that Finn/Rey fic with a surprise Rey/Kylo ending.

Agreed. If your fic is deliberately misleading and you dont want to tag it accurately, at least include an author's note suggesting there's stuff that might upset some readers so read at your own risk.
