Always good to remember how much January and February suck, as months of the year go

What makes them suck?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-14 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
- January means starting the year, which I generally think is a bad idea in principle
- Comedown from the excitement and rush of the holidays
- The weather sucks
- February has both Valentine's Day and my birthday, both of which I consider unpleasant and anxiety-inducing in different ways

I love the colder months, but around February things get all slushy and sloshy which I'm really not a fan of. So I'm half with you.

Thoughts About Oscar Noms

I hope Parasite wins BP.

Gerwig not getting a Director nomination seems like a bad joke.

IDK the Oscars are always pretty dumb so it's hard to really react that much.

I wanna see Joaquin Phoenix take Best Actor for his role in Joker

Re: Thoughts About Oscar Noms

(Anonymous) 2020-01-14 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
I hope Bong Joon-ho gets Best Director

I hope Joker wins nothing

Marriage Story and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood in no way deserve Best Picture nominations, even though we all saw that shit coming

ScarJo was actually *really* good in Jojo Rabbit, and that's coming from someone who's never been impressed by her before

I'm hoping Tom Hanks gets Best Actor in a Supporting Role

I think Parasite is a shoo-in for Best Foreign, it's sort of dominated the buzz in that section since it came out

I've never seen any of the docos, can't comment

I actually really loved "Into the Unknown", but I don't want Disney to get Original Song...

ALLLLLLL my love for Klaus for Best Animated Feature, it was great and I love 2D animation <3 <3 <3
[also I've never heard of I Lost My Body?]

I hope Little Women gets Adapted Screenplay, or failing that, Jojo Rabbit

Torn between Parasite and Knives Out for Original Screenplay - the former is tremendously worthy, of course, but the latter was a LOT of fun imo

IDGAF about any of the Best Actor nominations - Antonio Banderas, I guess?

...okay, I've heard good things about Renee Zwelleger in Judy, but it just feels like one of those movies that was made with an eye on the "Things That Appeal To The Academy" checklist. Not much to say about the rest - I haven't seen Harriet, I'm not sure it ran in any local theatres; Bombshell is just a movie trying to lionise racist white women and it can go choke.

I don't know enough about, like, the construction of movies? to really comment on the production or cinematography categories. Ditto sound editing, sound mixing, film editing, that lot. Very worthy fields, I just don't know jack about them.

Costume Design seems to be just "men in suits" "men in suits" Little Women "men in suits". I liked Jojo Rabbit, but I won't say there was anything very interesting about its costumes. Though, ScarJo does wear a really ugly hat at one point?

Kitbull was cute, but I haven't seen the other nominees for Animated Short, so I can't say. It might be the worst of the bunch, who knows.

Haven't seen any of the Live Action Shorts.

Original Score... I will briefly lift my hope that Joker wins nothing to say that it will be funny AF to hear some host or other trying to say 'Hildur Guðnadóttir'. As to the others... Not much to say, except that can't we all admit that John Williams has been doing the same thing for like, 20 years? I mean, it's a cool thing, works well for blockbuster action movies, but it's still the same thing. Also - fuck me, RANDY NEWMAN did the soundtrack for Marriage Story? Didn't see that coming!

If The Lion King gets Visual Effects I will be Very Disappointed. Can't we just accept it was very expensive and not very good, and all move on?

I'm sad Love, Antosha didn't get a nomination in the documentary feature (but it was expected.) It would have generated viewership and reminded people of who Anton Yelchin was one last time.

(Not vouching on whether the film is good or not. It won't be out until April in my region.)

The noms just made me think that 'oh, there were a lot of movies that old white men liked this year, because these are sure some old white men picks.' And I think it definitely says something about the make up of the academy that movies with better critical reviews featuring women and people of color didn't get as many noms as worse movies about the struggles of, shock, white men.

Confession

(Anonymous) 2020-01-14 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I buy music when I can afford it. But I download a lot of music from Youtube videos using the youtubetomp3 app. I've currently got 2000+ songs on my computer downloaded from the app, and TBH I really don't feel guilty about it.

Eh. I mostly use Spotify & the monetary difference is frankly negligible, so realistically I don't think the moral critique of downloading makes sense anymore.

I honestly should go back to actually buying music from independent artists, but that only really makes sense when you have the infrastructure set up around it, and it's so much more convenient to use cloud-based streaming services. When I switched over from my old laptop to my new one, I forgot to transfer my music collection, and now it's just a question of effort.

Re: Confession

(Anonymous) 2020-01-14 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
I used to check out CDs from the library and rip the music to put on my iPod back in the day.

Re: Confession

(Anonymous) 2020-01-14 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
I do this too. I do feel kind of guilty about it, mainly because some of the songs are by lesser known artists. I keep telling myself I'm going to start setting aside like $20 per month to start buy the songs properly, but I keep forgetting or putting it off. I guess that'll be a New Year's resolution for me this year.

Re: Confession

(Anonymous) 2020-01-14 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know very little people who actually buy their music/entertainment. You can download pretty much anything these days. I'll only buy music when I really like it and my spending problem is at it's peak, otherwise I don't bother.

Re: Confession

(Anonymous) 2020-01-14 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I only rip stuff when it's something that I can't purchase legally (like foreign songs that aren't on Amazon or Google in the US). Otherwise, it's so cheap to buy songs these days that I really can't justify not doing so.
